How I learned to quit X-Wing and love the atomic Bomb

By Goknights12, in X-Wing

Today is a day that will live in... well for me infamy. I haven't really played X-Wing for 10 months now, and honestly it's made me happy. I used to really like X-Wing, flying different ships, Y-Wings, X-Wings, seeing the new faction, but then it kept getting bigger.... and more new cards came, and more new cards, and the fifth iteration of the tie fighter, and then the resistance and the first order, and now the Patch today. Not only did X-Wing price me out with how much you have to buy, but it lack-of-funned (real word) me out.

X-Wing simply isn't fun anymore. If you don't buy everything the day it comes out you are already behind. There is no casual play, it's all tournament or league play and everyone has their META build and never deviate because they have to get ready for store, or regional, or national or World tournaments. I mean you used to not be able to get on here without seeing Fly Casual, not I'm not even sure that exists.

X-Wing is just simply too big now. There are too many cards, ships, combos (and yet most still only use one) and I refuse to continue buying three of one ships to get the card and never use the ships. How many B-Wings do I have, or Y-Wings. How many First Order Ties.

Maybe one day I will play X-Wing with the old ships, but sadly now they just collect dust while I enjoy other games.

I guess in a way this is a call for nostalgia and that maybe the game can revert to what it once was, hopeful thinking.

(I'm sure the comments for this will be glorious, because not only has the play not been casual but this forum has been a mine field)

don't forget your hispter goodie bag on the way out!

Sounds like you played with boring people.

How about not posting pointless and useless threads? If you don't enjoy it, thats fine, you dont have to be so loud in here for no reason other than to try to convince others not to play it? Which is in very bad taste.

Learn some decency.

Just play with friends. It's what I do. We made the first Saturday of every month team epic day.

Not being able to have fun playing a game, on your own turns, is more of a personal issue.

As is not being able to divorce competitive from casual play -- no one is making you go to tournaments/events, feel free to grow your own cabal of casual players (plenty of folks don't love, or at least require, competitive atmospheres).

And, not that this isn't strictly a "to each their own," kind of thing, but X-Wing is one of the cheapest miniature games around, even if you choose to buy everything... Which is literally not a requirement to be competitive, and certainly not to have fun.

Oh geez, one of these threads. Everything you listed basically is what happens with any gaming system that gets a following. It, well, grows. I know people that don't buy every ship and they do just fine. If they need a card for a tournament, they act like grown ups and ask to borrow one from the community for a tournament, if not for a tournament, they tell the other player they are proxing. Casual works just fine if you, know ask the players. I know a few that are currently trying to schedule a epic game.

Most of these threads usually come down to passive aggressive behavior, and its truly unbefitting of any social group to be that way.

It's funny you say there's no casual play anymore because I go to a store every week that has casual players with small collections playing and missions and epic games happening.

I don't agree, but you can do as you like.

Bye

Hmmmmmm, I'm sorry Xwing makes you sad. Personally, I came in at wave 2 and have never played an officially sanctioned game yet. Heck, I've only played at a store twice. Sure, it's gotten way too complicated and fiddly for me too, but if competition isn't your thing then that shouldn't matter too much. Right?

Maybe try a expack mission, check out Mission Control, play HotAC (squeeeeee), 50 pt matches, EPIC, make your own ships...there are soooo many other options. Between HotAc, painting and making/playing missions we play with our spacecraft 4 or more times a week.

I hope you stay around and find your inner Pew,just do what makes you happy. :D

Bye, Felicia.

I literally just found a new flgs tonight. Just walked in to check on their pricing, and found about a half dozen games going on in the basement! Friendly, welcoming atmosphere, everybody having fun. A few were testing out the tie/sf, saw a couple proxies, not a SINGLE U-boat or palpmobile.

Sounds like you just need to look harder. Or just sell me your collection. I'll put it to good use on Monday nights.

This isn't even close to true in the areas I've seen. Sorry you play in a junkie area.

Hey mate, ignore the fanboys in this thread. You're not the only one to feel this way. The game started becoming bloated a while ago and it's turning into a lumbering behemoth now, in desperate need of a second edition.

I got into X Wing because I love Star Wars. But there's precious little Star Wars to be found in the 'standard' X Wing games. So my advice to you, as someone who probably loves Star Wars too, is to stop playing 100/6 games altogether. They suck the fun out the game faster than something that sucks really fast. Instead try running a HotAC campaign, then run through the campaigns that come with the huge ships, play some Epic games, then just start playing games at random points levels. Like 150 points, 600 points, 400 points, whatever. X Wing is a great game and it has the potential to be heaps of fun, but if you only ever play 100/6 games then you're only playing the most boring, shallow aspect of the game. Once you step aside from the PvP competitive meta, the game really flourishes again. Not least because you don't NEED all the new bells and whistles to stay at the cutting edge of whatever the meta-of-the-month is. The real trick is finding like-minded opponents to play with. As you observe, too many people are obsessed with playing 100/6 at the exclusion of all else. Use Facebook to find like-minded gamers and talk to people in your group who you might suspect are feeling the same way.

Not being able to have fun playing a game, on your own turns, is more of a personal issue.

The problem is that the overwhelming majority of players in pick-up environments only want to play 100/6 games. No one wants to see how the game works at 150 points or 200 points or 75 points, or by flying missions or altering the terrain set-up.

I live in Contra Costa County, a county in the San Franciso Bay Area. There are two game stores here. One of these stores used to have, a year ago, every Tuesday night for casual play. Now, that night is for Pathfinder and Dungeons and Dragons. On other nights, people are playing Magic and Pokemon. The stores which are outside my county host league games and tournaments. I know of one store in Santa Clara, which is an hour away, which does have casual playing. At another store, where it is running a tournament, they have set aside time for learning the game. I have put my name for this event.

There are balance issues in the game, as was proved by FFG fixing a balance issue in the latest FAQs.

What is 100/6? I am not familiar with this term.

100 points 6 obstacles.

Regardless of the passive-aggressive tones of the OP, I can't but agree with some of his complaints.

I have been playing since Wave 5 and in this time I have found a grand total of zero people willing to play any format other than 100 points 6 obstacles, save for two occasions when I managed to convince some guys into playing with the epics ships we all had bought (and they heavily disliked for lack of balance).

Many of you are lucky that you have friends willing to play missions, HotAC, escalations, furballs, hunger games, or the epic campaigns.

In my experience, that is the exception, and as the OP says, most players are always training for the next tournament.

I'm not planning on quitting the game anytime soon, since I have a complete collection and I still find it fun.

But I can totally understand that a newcomer willing to spend just a couple hundreds on the game might feel steamrolled by everyone's meta squadron all the time.

I hope yesterday's FAQ rebalancing will open up the diversity of the game so that more people can have a chance to have fun with whatever they own without being utterly wiped out by round 2.

Thanks, Azrapse.

To be honest, I think the bigger issue is that noobies want to get into the game because of the Star Wars, and they see these cool X Wings and TIE Fighters and think "Hey, yeah! Let's play that X Wing attack on the Starkiller base! What do you mean there's no rules for that? Oh well, let's do the trench run! No rules for that either? Ok, let's escort some transports away from Hoth? What do you mean you only want to play a standard game? What about a battle of Endor re-fight? What about all the cool missions from the X Wing and TIE Fighter PC games? What about all the cool missions the pilots in the Rogue Squadron books flew? What do you mean FFG only supports tournament play?"

The 100/6 format is so entrenched as the ONLY way to play that people who aren't looking for a tournament style experience are immediately turned off.

Part of the problem is that when you're playing against strangers, that having a standardised form of play (in this case 100/6) makes it easier to organise games. If you want to play other formats you really need to start looking on Facebook for local gaming groups, and arranging those games before-hand and for special occasions. The store game night is really not a place for casual gamers.

There are tonnes of scenarios. There are rules for Epic, You can play 125 of 150 pts, You can dump all your asteroids on the table and have a game where the board is chocker...

The only thing that limits you to 100/6 is your own imagination. I've never found a problem with getting people to have some fun.

If you are worried about balance, play the scenario twice and swap squads, See who does better.

Team epic is a blast. More toys and more friends.

I am friends with most of the remaining Casuals here... there are a few dozen of us. You can always just hang with us and grow your ignore list as these bad ex-40k'ers get on your last nerve.

This place HAS BECOME ACE WING.

BUT... that is no reason at all for you to stop playing the game. Just play how you want to play. You do not need to keep up with all of this ACE WING CRAP.

I hope you can get past the upset and just Love STAR WARS Gaming... again.

:)

For what it's worth guys, Lurkus Maximus is already gone.

Yeah. I posted for the benefit of anyone lurking who might have similar feelings, who don't wish to make them known.

See below:

What actually limits you to 100/6 is opponents. If your opponents are unwilling to step away from the 100/6 format, then you don't get to play anything else. And most opponents are very unwilling to step away from it.

Ah... apply more beer.... then arrange your games.

But yeah that can be a problem, You saw it a lot in 40k too. It's a cultural issue really, so you have to change the culture, change the venue, find a pub that will let you play, get extra mates and play a doubles game. If people are getting stuck in a rut you have to shake things up. If people are around other tournament players that will change the whole nature of the interaction.
