Does Youngster work with TIE/SF Fighters?

By TC Fel, in X-Wing Rules Questions

It's not addressed in the new FAQ whether Youngster can let TIE/sf pilots use his abilities.

Any opinions on this?

The rules are pretty clear that if it says 'TIE fighter' its a TIE fighter.

Whether it be TIE/FO Fighter or TIE/sf Fighter.

The FAQ currently says :

Youngster” can use his ability in conjunction with TIE fighters as well as TIE/fo fighters.

I think you'd be safe to assume "Youngster" would also work with TIE/sf Fighters. The " Ship-type only " entry on page 20 of the rulebook would also tend to support this. But if in doubt, email FFG.

He works with Tie/SF's

Tie/sf is a different beast as the Tie/fo. Its hardly a Tie Fighter any longer. I am not fond that this applies. Unless you say it applies to all H shaped Ties, whereas it does not apply to <-o-> or (-o-) or (=o=) or even (o=o) shaped Ties.

It needed to be FAQed imho.

No it doesn't (partly because it already has been, or at least, enough of a test case has). Whether you like it or not, there's no question that Youngster's ability works on any ship whose name includes the words 'TIE' and 'Fighter', currently the original TIE Fighter, the TIE/fo Fighter and the TIE/sf Fighter.

It's not about the shape of the ship, or how similar it is to an original TIE Fighter, it's about the words in its name.

... the rules say if the title of the ship includes the entirety of the words 'TIE fighter'(eg TIE/FO Fighter, TIE/SF fighter), then it can use upgrades and abilities restricted to 'TIE Fighters'.

This has nothing to do with what the ship looks like, and does not require an FAQ on account of being clearly written in the rules.

The same rules apply to things that say 'TIE only'(i.e. TIE engine mk.2), which can be given to ANY ship with the word 'TIE' in the title (Defender, Phantom, Punisher etc.)

Yes. Any ship with "TIE" and "fighter” in its name works with “Youngster’s” ability.

I just added that to the email collection thread .

By contrast, that also means SFs can be in a Gozanti.

....kinda want a 4th SF now just so i can do that lol.

Yup, as long as nothing but TIE/sfs are in that Gozanti.
