New Biggs Rules

By Lightrock, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This one's bound to surface sooner rather than later, so it would be nice to clear it up: if Biggs is within range 1 of the ship that you have locked can you choose to use a weapon that requires a target lock to fire and thus ignore Bigg's effect? At first glance it would seem so, because you cannot use that weapon against Biggs due to lack of target lock. However the timing chart for performing the attack contains following points during the "Declare target" step:

(...)

ii.
Attacker chooses weapon
iii.
Declare target of the attack
iv.
Pay cost to perform the attack (if applicable)

(...)

So it basically boils down to this: does "declare target of the attack" already take into account that you have to pay the cost thus making Biggs a non-legit target for that attack or does Biggs still block the attack in question? I believe the former is true, since the cards for weapons with that requirement typically contain the keyword "Attack (target lock)", limiting the list of potential targets only to the ships you have locked.

The new FAQ spells it out.

Biggs Darklighter's ability does not trigger if the attacker chose a weapon that cannot target Biggs Darklighter.

Furthermore, biggs is also negated if you have a targetlock based ordnance.

Per the rules, you must have a target lock on the ship to declare it as a target. So before you get to the spending step, since you dont HAVE to spend a TL to resolve an attack [targetlock] (though most of them tell you to anyway), you can only declare 1 target anyway (2 with engineer). If biggs is not that 1(2) target(s) then he is ignored.

My LRS bombers are happy :D

I don't think that's right. The timing chart splits the Declare Target step into five distinct substeps:

(i) Measure range and check firing arc

(ii) Choose weapon

(iii) Declare target of your attack

(iv) Spend cost of the attack (if applicable)

(v) Target is now defender

Biggs triggers at substep (iii) after you choose your weapon and prevents you from declaring a target other than Biggs regardless of Target Locks. If you do not have a Target Lock on Biggs, you will fail the Declare Target step, as you can't spend the Target Lock to perform the attack. This applies even with Homing Missiles, as you cannot discard the Homing Missiles card on a ship that you do not have Target Locked.

If your entire list is ordnance based I suppose it makes sense. Otherwise, is it really beneficial to split your fire between 2 targets though?

I agree with this. In the Learn to Play booklet under Secondary Weapons (PG 14) it states:

The attack may specify other requirements in parentheses, such as "Attack (Target Lock)," which means the attacker must have a target lock on the target.

Nothing in the FAQ says to ignore this part.

The upside on all this, is poor ol' Biggs might last a bit longer in a game. Of course, that's if anybody takes him now.

I've had a few games where my Biggs actually survived along with his wingmates. :)

I think we'll still see him. He's still a very good pilot in the game, but there needed to be some way to circumvent his ability -- especially once Erso is legal.
