With new FAQ - Questions still not answered.....

By emmjay, in X-Wing

Ok, with a new FAQ posted, there are always new questions raised, or raised questions still not answered. Use this thread to identify such items for future reference.

IG-88D crew Gunner Crew with IG-88B. Both Gunner and IG-88D trigger at the same time (if a shot misses). IG-88B allows a secondary weapon attack, and does not specify not being able to attack again. Gunner says "Immediately" and "Cannot attack again this round". So, with the changes to step 9 of the Combat Phase, can I choose to do IG-88D(b) ability first then Gunner, or since Gunner states "Immediately" does that mean Gunner must be performed first. Also, if gunner is performed first, due to the updates to step 9, it appears that IG-88D(b) can also happen????

There is a MAY in front of the Immediately on Gunner, so it is an option. You can choose to activate IG-88B first. If you activate Gunner first, then the restriction to making any additional attacks would apply, so you would not have the option to use IG-88B later.

anything that triggers simultaneously you pick the order.

The new FAQ only prevented the unique interaction between iggy + gunner where the first miss would let you fire BOTH weapons. Now, you fire with iggy's ability because gunner specifically states you are done and cant fire again, and if THAT missed then you can fire gunner.

Here's one we're debating on Facebook:

If I have a target lock on a ship within Range 1 of Biggs but not Biggs himself, and I declare I'm using a weapon that requires me to have or spend a target lock I have on the target, am I:

1) able to target the other ship, since I can't legally fire the chosen weapon at Biggs; or

2) required to target Biggs because technically I don't pay any cost to fire the weapon until after I choose the target, and up to that point, Biggs is a legal target? Meaning I'd name him the target, but be unable to meet the cost or fire since I'm not locked on him?

As of right now, you are able to fire the ordnance.

Long as the ordnance uses a TL, your chosen weapon cannot hit biggs so you ignore him.

Which is amazing for someone like me that loves LRS Homercrack Bombers. FU biggs, im blowing that ARC up.

See, that's my thinking, but the other side is saying that having or spending the target lock is a cost, which isn't paid until after you select your target. So you'd say, "Torpedoes at Wedge, have to target Biggs, can't spend target lock, Biggs doesn't become defender, back to step 1." At which point you'd have to choose a different weapon.

Incorrect, look at the timing chart. This was in the last faq which ruined the aggromech crap of deadeye = free targetlock because you spent a focus.

You use a cost for an attack BEFORE declaring the target. Yes it makes whacky ass sense involving targetlocks, but you dont declare until after you choose/spend any costs.

It ruined the aggromech because you cant acquire a TL when you have no target, and you chose a target after he triggers.

Ah, here it is in the rules reference:

If there is no valid target for the chosen weapon, or if the attacker cannot pay any costs required for the attack, the attacker may choose a different weapon and target.

So I guess you would go back to the top.

They updated the timing chart though:

*rereads aggromech faq* ok so apparently becoming the defender isnt simo with declare target....which is still whacky as hell but whatever.

Technically the ordnance would still work though because you cant choose a target that doesnt have a TL.

Not every attack requires you to actually spend the targetlock, you have to have the targetlock there to declare the target though.

Ah, so before you even reach the cost step, you wouldn't be able to target Biggs because he wasn't locked?

Although that rule states the defender has to be locked, not the target. And since Biggs cares about targeting, it seems like you could still be forced to target him, not meet the requirements to make him the defender, and have to choose a different weapon.

Stop twisting words. Now. Please.

I'm not twisting anything. The timing chart clearly states that the target becoming the defender is a distinct step. So they're two distinct concepts.

The sub-steps of "Declare Target" are very clear. If you do them in order, then the new FAQ entry for Biggs makes perfect sense.

Attacking ship choses (insert weapon name here.) Biggs is not an eligible target for chosen weapon. Attack proceeds without targeting biggs.

Oh I agree with you. I was merely presenting the counter argument my friends were offering.

Actually, the new FAQ explicitly allows you to fire using both Gunner and IGB (via IGD crew) after a single missed attack. The new text in step 9 allows you to choose to resolve IGB (via IGD crew) and delay resolving Gunner until step 9 of the IGB attack.
