Is the Scyk Fixed?

By Firespray-32, in X-Wing

Can you see a list of 5 of them walking things off the board?

Yeah, I wouldn't do it, but it's a funny idea.

I would go with 3 of them and 2 with Tractor beams, to speed the walking things off the board along.

People have done decent with 3 Khiraxz Fighters and 2 Cannon Scyks in the past. They might even do better now.

I've got 2 M3s and 2 Kihraxzs.

Can I make anything viable out of that? Really struggled with them in the past but they look so nice together! Perhaps now is the time.

So now I need more Mindlink cards...

So now I need more Mindlink cards...

Which means there is still a use for all those Jumpmasters people bought!

Pst, don't tell them, I want to pick up a cheap one first :P

I initially only had one, then had to buy another because I was being bullied by X7 Defenders and Palp Aces, ohh well back to the drawing board I guess.

Haha I'm in the same boat. Not sure I need another Jumpmaster now, but interested in mindlink.

Question for those who've tried it: What's the general strategy for determining the anchor? Do you pick an anchor ship when listbuilding? Or do you decide based on game state?

Proxy first! No use buying and then not liking. :) I did that already.

Enemy not running PTL? that's fine, Flechettes set up stress for your PS1 BMST to knock down- and the enemy still has to commit to a green maneuver in case you fail.

At 20 points for a Mangler Cannon Scyk, I think they compare pretty well with the generic Kihraxz and Protectorate, certainly.

The Alpha Interceptor is 18 points. It only has 3 hull (no shield) and does not turn a normal hit into a crit. The addition of that one point of hull is actually a pretty big change. I'm looking forward to trying some builds.

If this has already been stated but I missed it....

If you equip the Heavy Scyk title are you forced to take the secondary weapon as well? Or can I just take the title as 2pt. Hull Upgrade and save some pts?

Thanks.

20pt Mangler Scyk is about on par with most other low PS generic ships...

That is damning with faint praise

So excited by this new FAQ that I painted my Scyk after work. Now I just need to immediately run out and buy three more with no serious thought about it.

I'm beyond keen to get an all-Scyk Mindlink list on the table.

Serissu (24)

  • Attani Mindlink
  • "Heavy Scyk"
  • Tractor Beam
  • Attani Mindlink
  • "Heavy Scyk"
  • "Mangler" Cannon
  • Attani Mindlink
  • "Heavy Scyk"
  • "Mangler" Cannon
  • Attani Mindlink
  • "Heavy Scyk"
  • Heavy Laser Cannon

I do realise the irony of running Serissu and her guys in Black Sun colours, but it sounds like a fun little squad.

Ummm.....the title just gives you the weapon upgrade. Well, and now gives you the Hull. So, you don't have to buy the upgrade. That actually is kind of a funny way to just get a Hull upgrade for one that you don't want to actually give a weapon to.

Still....I'd probably want to at least stick on a 1 pt Tractor Beam Cannon on someone.....

I'm not sure you can run a whole list of mindlinked scyks. I think sooner or later the stress effect bites you and they don't have the greens of the fang fighters. I think mindlink needs palob, guri or manaroo to work. But you can certainly fit in one scyk.

I wish Laetin had an EPT slot. He would be the biggest winner here. The title change doesn't really affect the choice of scyks - either go for a low PS with a HLC (26 with title and hull upgrade isn't shabby) or you go for Serissu as a force multiplier.

5x Mangler Scyks. Do it. DO IT!

Back before the fix I took out an IG list with this so definitely excited to try some new things, maybe with tractor beam in the mix.

I hate MathWing, and I'm a long-time competitive player who's been playing in tournaments since Wave 1. Mathwing is pretty useless, and this assumption that the value of all ships is an objective, absolute thing that can be calculated is laughable, in no small part because the value of a ship is entirely relative to what it's facing on the actual table (think Soontir vs 8 Zs vs Soontir vs Deci+Gunner+Vader), not based upon some rigid absolute number that decrees balanced or broken after checking against a hyper-abstract jousting value.

I agree that the math can't tell you everything about the game of X-Wing, not even close. But like, what are you arguing? That we shouldn't use math to try and calculate the value of anything?

If that's the case, what would you use as your baseline if you were put in charge of designing new ships for the game? Would you base all your new ships around the point costs of previous ships and hope they're roughly equivalent? What do you think those early ships were based off of?

Mathwing does not predict the entire game, but we have to try and calculate a baseline for our ship values somehow , and that's what the point system is supposed to be for.

Your argument is over-costed by 1.73 points.
