I know the jealousy level is really high for all of you now. Also it would have had way more frames if I didn't make it on my phone..... Maybe some word bubbles.....

P1 finishes attack

P2 is rudely continuing to add up damage and apply to his ship

P1 picks up man tool as clearly P2 doesnt want to G8 as they would have said

P2 finishes sorting out their shields and decides to G8

So this part I still can't get.

A corvette is at speed 3.

Imperial player decides to use G8 to reduce it to speed 3 before Determine Course phase. Corvette player decides then to use his token, after fiddling around with his man tool of course, to increase his current speed back to speed 3.

Corvette moves.

Does the corvette's speed dial now revert to 3 or 4?

What happens if we replace the corvette example above with a slower ship that maxes out at speed 3?

G8s reduce speed by one temporarily. So maneuver is speed dial -1.

To avoid travelling temporarily at speed2, the corvette must speed up to speed dial 4. This is then 4-1, temporary speed 3.

If the ship was not able to go speed 4, then the speed dial could not be increased to compensate for g8s.

If it's a casual game, well, walk away.

It's forbidden by tournament rules anyway, so there's solid ground to argue before going into rage mode ("Players are expected to act with respect and not intentionally distract or rush an opponent with the intent of forcing a missed opportunity.")

Sure, picking up the man tool is the strict end of the window. In essence, though, it's a before timing so the defender has to decide to G8 or not without any clear information about where the ship is going to land and the attacker can determine course knowing if G8 has been used or not.

So yeah, your general rule works for both players, don't be a prat. And remember your effects. I think that second part is almost as important.

Now if it were a while timing, it would be a whole other can of worms. Which is mostly why I hope I'm not mistaken in my reasoning :D
