I am confused at how this is a troop transport...the ship isn't much bigger than a Y-Wing...
U-Wing is a troop transport?
It has a bulged belly.. and they don't ride in comfort.
Edit: And movie reasons. This argument trumps all others...
Edited by LagJansonAnd yet, large base
Guess they ride on that

It has a cabin with pilot and copilot side-by-side and a crew compartment with door gunners...
It still is.
the CH-47 Chinook is 20' shorter than the Y-Wing, it's all about space manipulation.
But I don't disagree.

Space manipulation?
So it is bigger on the inside?

Exactly. That's how a Federation TARDIS works, but only if piloted by a Wookiee.
unless I'm missing some offcial data, I belive the u wing is bigger than the y wing.
If you look at several pictures of the u wing from different angles it's clearly a larger ship. The bellie of the u wing is much deeper(taller) and wider than the cock pit area above the wings. I don't know the exact raitios but it's as if one third is above the wings and two thirds below the wings.
It has some similarities to the republics LAAT, that vehicle wasn't very large either.
It's like a minivan. You can haul quite a few bodies in a small spot.
Look at any modern military troop transports. As someone whos been on them, they arent designed to be comfy, theyre designed to fit as much as possible.
Sitting hip to hip on the sides and knee to knee across the walkway fits a lot of people. Though i admit its kinda funny when youre between two girls lol
It is the clown car of troop transports - there's an idea for an alt paint job,..
Something something back home. Something something not much bigger than a Y-Wing.

Yeah, the trunk of my car's proven that at least six different times.

Everyone knows the official measurement for trunk space is bodies.
Compared to the Rebels' attack shuttle, it's real roomy.

the attack shuttle is only built to shuttle attack
The imperial Shuttle is somewhere between a bus and a pickup truck - big, cavernous space inside, with roomy access ramp. The Emperor rides in style on this thing, make no mistake. You could fit an entire platoon in the thing and have space left over.
The U-wing is closer to an APC - cram a dozen dudes into a tight hold, and it'll get them to where they need to be in one piece. But you don't want to be on a lengthy commute in the thing.

It'd be nice if they measured by small bodies for once, though.
Hard to find good space for that in this economy. I don't need a hatchback, y'know? My collector's goods are my own to see. Nobody else's.
Nobody.

Umm, I googled the lengths of both and I can't seem to find a source that says what you say. I've seen 30m in length for the Chinook and 23.4m for the y-wing.
On a separate note, the size of the y-wing may have something to do with it being hyperspace capable and maybe the U-wing isn't. The key difference in size though would be the height of the actual fuselage. The Y-wing is thin across the whole body of the ship whereas from the footage in the trailers we can see that it has a bit of height to the fuselage. This is all speculation though but who knows
. The new Disney stuff doesn't really care about much of what the previous trilogies built up so it could just be lazy design.

Chinook (52' for the fuselage, 98' - or 30.1m - with rotors)
Y-Wing (23.m, or 76')

Derp. Welp, guess I was and still am too tired to be browsing on here. Sorry.
