Getting started with Armada

By MonkeyInSpace, in Star Wars: Armada

hey all,

So I recently came into possession of the Core kit as payment for a debt and am a little bit lost as to where to start. I'm an old hand at XWM so I'm not concerned about picking up the rules but am curious if there are any squad builder apps (my Google Fu was weak) or recommended builds or other non-YouTube related sources of reference I should be looking at?

As stated, I only have the Core right now but will also be getting a few expansions as part of the debt settlement (assuming I can guess the new security code) but am curious what people would recommended as the first few additions for a starter player?

thanks in advance,

Curious Monkey

All of the expansions are worth picking up. Will you be building up rebs and imps?

Also armada warlords is a great site to use.

There's also battlescribe and fab's fleet generator.

Can't forget Ryan Kingstons Fleet Builder!

Especially for its great output!

Sorry to butt in.... My core set arrives today. :) I'm thinking of going Imperials as that's what I collect in x-wing. Can I just collect imperial ships or are there some Rebel ships with useful cards? Thinking in x-wing you have ships like the Star Viper with Autothrusters which is a must have for Imperials. Is there one really useful imperial ship to start with? Thanks

I don't think there are any must haves, however there are some good upgrade cards that can be useful. Try looking into armada warlords, that site has all the upgrades with a note on which expansion they come with.

The Nebulon-B (Rebel) expansion has XI7 Turbolasers.

I consider this a "must have" card for Imperials.

If you are playing in a casual environment, though, I'm sure you can just proxy whatever cards you need.

Also worth pointing out that there are a lot of single upgrade cards available on eBay for a good price - it can be a lot cheaper to go this route if you really don't think you'll ever play the other faction.

XI7's were a recent tournament card, you can typically pick up sets of 3-5 for extremely cheap on auction sites.

Other than that if you are going Imperials you absolutely must get an ISD. It's just too flexible and iconic not to. From there, a couple of Gozantis and 2 copies of the fighter pack are useful. Another VSD for the Flight Controllers upgrade is great. Gladiator is great. Raider is probably skippable. Interdicter is probably skippable as well unless you want it cause it's shiny and has a lot of fun tricks it can add to your fleet.

Thanks all. An ISD was always high on my list so looks like that my first step! Then I'll probably eBay the turbolasers card when I'm ready for tournaments.

Got to say the core set is pretty amazing it's took ages to go through it all and surprised how good/big the VSD model is (I don't know why I was surprised after seeing it in so many pictures). The high price (compared to x-wing) had put me off but my concerns seem unjustified.

I've read mixed reviews on the Raider in Armada. This makes me sad as I love playing it in epic x-wing. At least the Gozantis sound like a decent add.

Well, that's because in X-Wing, the Raider is the Biggest, baddest, Meanest, Shooty-est thing in the System.....

Here, its small fry...

At least they carry over the theme and keep it big, and bad, and shooty *against squadrons*.

It just has an affinty for taking tubolasers to the face, something it doesn't have to worry about in X-Wing.
