Pilot skill cards

By 4xholic, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Ok, with cards which change your pilot skill - are they optional?? As an example, my son setup so he set his skill to 0, and had veteran which added 2 to his skill. Therefore, is the following a legal move?

- For activation phase, declare Pilot skill 0 and therefore move first

- Then for the combat, declare Pilot +2 and get to attack first.

Thanks

They are not optional, not can they be changed at any time. They are set at the beginning of the game when the card is equipped (Veteran Instincts) or placed (Adaptability).

To change your PS during the game, you need cards like Roark Garnet, Swarm Tactics, Decoy, etc.

EDIT: The closest thing to what you're describing is probably Enhanced Scopes. I used it once to send Captain Kagi (with Anti-Pursuit Lasers) bowling for B-Wings and still get to shoot them first.

Just how did he manage that?

Thanks for the comments - I'll have to wait 'till tomorrow to get the card details and then I'll post back.

Enhanced scopes doesn't "change" your pilot skill, it simply tells you to treat it as "0" during activation, meaning that you move before everything else that isn't also zero (due to a critical damage, in which case, initiative comes into play). For everything else, it remains as set and/or adjusted.

For example, I could equip Darth Vader as such:
Darth Vader (30) TIE Advanced (29), TIE/x1 (0), Veteran Instincts (1), Enhanced Scopes (0)

Yes, it would be silly. But in that case, Vader would activate first at Pilot Skill 0, and shoot first, at Pilot Skill 11.

OK, so one of the cards is "Veteran Instincts", which increases your pilot skill by 2. If your pilot has a skill of 7, you would increase to 9 for the duration of the game. You could not alternate between 7 and 9 throughout the game - correct?

Correct. If you equip VI you're at PS +2 for the duration of the match.

Unless something else changes the PS at some time.

If you lose VI during the match, something that I believe only Boba Fett can do, you would also lose that +2 bonus for the remainder of the match.

True. Or if you suffer a crit that reduces your PS to zero. But, outside of an in-game effect, if you started with VI assigned to the ship, it applies for the duration.

Still, his zero at activation and 9 during shooting example sounds like VI and Enhanced Scopes, which is exactly how they work. Toggling between 7 and 9, however... nope. You have to obey all the cards effects.

Yes, he was using VI + Enhanced Scope -> thank you all for your clarification. What is the benefit of using Enhanced Scope?

If a high PS ace is using bombs he may place his mines in front / at an enemy ship, hence he has got no options to escape. You may also want to move and use actions as a first and block enemies ships to deny their actions. But that card does not see play in competitive tournaments.
