TLT + Gunner + FCS + Weapons Engineer Question

By Zefirus, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So I believe this will work, but wanted to get a second opinion.

Say I have a Lothal Rebel kitted out like the following.

Now say that I get a ship range one from the main gun. Can I use a TLT shot on another target, miss the first shot, trigger gunner before the second shot, trigger FCS to obtain a target lock on both that target AND the target sitting in range one, then take a target locked shot on the enemy at range 1 using the attack given to me by gunner? I don't think I see any contradictions there. Planning on taking a double VCX list to a tournament and I'm toying around with this one.

Nope! Latest FAQ requires you to miss BOTH TLT shots to trigger it.

Other than that detail, the combo works as you have described it. But the rarity of actually missing with both TLT shots makes TLT + Gunner a bad bet.

The answer is on page 15 of the FAQ. "When using a secondary weapon that says "perform this attack twice", both attacks must miss for Gunner to activate.

That breaks the chain of what you're trying to do, and you're not even out of the gate.

Then on page 14 of the FAQ, "If a ship equipped with Fire-Control System attacks with a secondary weapon that says "perform this attack twice," the ship acquires a target lock only after the second attack."

Chain broken again.

Read the timing chart too, it should clear up the rest.

The main thing you need to remember is that "After attacking" effects (like FCS and Gunner) do not trigger after the first attack of a "Perform this attack twice" secondary weapon.

It doesn't trigger until the entire attack sequence ends. I was attempting to cut it off with Gunner, which is deliberately NOT after attacking. It's after you perform an attack that misses. This is the reason why it was apparently FAQ'd specifically.

Oh well, this works just as well with an Ion turret. Better even, as if I accidentally hit the target with the turret, well I have an ionized ship.

Ok, so far so good.

What?

Gunner's trigger "After you perform an attack" is 100% equivalent to "After attacking". It is the exact same thing.

Gunner could very well have read "After attacking, if the attack did not hit, you may...".

This is the reason why it was apparently FAQ'd specifically.

Nothing about Gunner's timing was "FAQ'd specifically".

All "after attacking/defending" abilities that trigger a separate attack follow the same timing, which is specified in the timing chart.

The only thing that was specified in the FAQ regarding Gunner and "perform this attack twice" weapons is that both shots have to miss for Gunner to trigger... But that has nothing to do with the timing.
