starter + draft format

By TylerTT, in Star Wars: Destiny

I love drafting! It's by far my favorite way to collect and play these games. here is my thought for a functional draft format.

Players use a starter deck and 4 packs.

Players open all their packs at the start of the draft and create two "packs" from them. the "rare" pack and the card pack.

Players put all their dice in the center of the table (like a dice masters rainbow draft) and then draft from the rare pack of cards first. Then player's draft from the cards only pack and afterward collect their matching dice.

After that players construct their decks using their chosen starter and their resulting collection.

Alternatively players could add the dice from the starter to the "rare pack"

or they could skip the starter deck and play a smaller game with fewer character points and smaller card decks.

No guarantee you get enough characters with draft. Unless special draft pack like netrunner uses appear this game does not led it's elf well to draft

That's why players bring a starter deck. The starter deck is the reusable draft pack.

I am probably in the minority, but I have no love for drafts.

I agree, a huge part of the fun of games like this for me is creating and tweaking my decks. However, I definitely see the value in things like drafts, especially if it gives the new players a way to start the game for cheaper.

The starter is not going to be a good base for a diverse draft. I hope they make draft sets like they (FFG) has with Netrunner.

A Starter and 4 boosters would make for an expensive draft as well.

Starter is useless for draft after the first one or two drafts.

No one is going to go to a weekly draft just to have to buy another starter. There's literally zero reason to get more than 2 of each starter pack.

There is no reason you'd have to buy a starter each week, just bring your own starter back each week. I've seen games do similar things before for draft and I expect it would work for this game too.

the starters are reusable. Another thing that could be changed is deck biulding restrictions no hero or. Ilan restriction or perhaps no color restriction.

Yeah I guess you could reuse a starter and just buy boosters.... but at that point you could just say "draft a deck from boosters and take whatever characters you want".

but that kind of defeats the purpose of a draft.

In any case, do people want to play with the same starter set heroes each week?

The starter would just be insurance against no character draws, you could still draft characters and use them in place of the starter characters. I'm not saying it is perfect but I've played in a number of games that did drafts in a similar manner and it worked fine.

My hope though is that FFG will provide draft kits with draft heroes or something like that though as I think that would be better.

Drafts don't have to be fixed in form, players could bring 15-20 cards, mission and characters and draft the remaining 10-15. There are probably a few different ways players could do this.

One of the problems with many games is the games become tournament driven and players end up playing the same old way over and over. How many X-Wing games are not 100 points fight to the death? A small minority would be different in my estimation.

Oh yeah, I love the idea of draft. I'm just not sure how destiny would do it.

It would be cool to have a draft packs that maybe didn't come with dice but included more cards... so you could draft like 4 dice packs and 4 card packs. Or like mentioned above bring your own characters and a few supports and then only draft the deck without any extra dice. Maybe draft can be restricted to 8 dice only or something like that?

I've been saying for ages that X-wing needs missions like Imperial Assault has. It would shake up tournaments because arc dodgers might be good at some missions but not others, and big ships might be better in other situations etc....

Part of the reason I don't play X-wing much anymore is that 100pts is boring, the game's not overly balanced for other point values and epic games are too expensive. I've played escalation before and that was pretty cool. Need more of that.

Literally every single X-Wing big ship (Millennium Falcon size) comes with scenario driven missions. The huge ships (CR90, Raider, etc) come with entire campaigns...

I am gonna work on creating a draft format, but wont be able to test it for a while :) .

MY initial thoughts are as follows-

Players should bring from starters:

Starter characters (Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn, First Order Stormtrooper). All grey Neutral cards from the starter (Aim, Block, Flank, Close Quarters Assault, Dodge) up to 2 copies of each. Battlegrounds.

Players will be in pods of 4 and draft 5 packs.

When you open a pack all players put the dice in the middle of the table.

When you draft a dice card you retrieve the dice from the middle of the table.

You will build 20 card decks.

I don't know how or if a draft would viable with the game in it's current state.

I'd say leave the dice in the middle of the table until the end of the draft, that way you aren't telegraphing what you've drafted. Works well in Dicemasters.

Sounds Good!

And when was the last time you saw anyone play those? I'm talking about organised play evenings, tournaments and pick up games at the FLGS. That's why I compared to IA. It has different maps and missions that rotate through. It's a different game every few months.

Of course you're free to do whatever you like casually at home, that's part of the beauty of X-wing.

But 99% of the games in the wider community is 100pt dogfight.

Keep up the draft discussion though. I'd love to see a good draft mode.

The other issue with the missions that come in the "deluxe" boxes is that they don't seem to be well-balanced. More often than not, they seem to be showcase missions that favor the ship the mission was packaged with.

Regarding drafts, if this game works as other collectible games (My Little Pony, Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering), then there will be new starter decks with each set. If this happens, then a draft system where you choose a starter deck which you will customize during the draft would become more varied over time as there are more starter decks available to choose from. My gut, however, tells me that FFG will not be releasing new starter sets with each set. We'll just have to wait and see.

There are 6 non unique heroes cards, one for each color and side. I can actually see you bringing them and then picking two of them as your heroes after you draft. You still have to decide what to do if you draft as hero as that would be powerful. I could actual see you drafting 3 packs as one, but that is 9 packs for $27.....hmmm

One idea I just had as a ''draft'' format would be to have every player buy 2-3 booster pack as an entry cost. Every players bring a standard team (30pts hero with 30 cards) and we compete as usual. Then, when the tournament is over, we all open our booster pack and create a pool with it. We then pick one card each with the tournament standing to determine the order of pick.

not really a draft more of a self organized tournament with prize support. I like it!

Yeah, it's more a price drafting than a draft format.

I think it would be a good format to help round up a collection. I'll probably give it a try to start our community.

we do "snake drafting" for prizes locally. you put everything out and then pick in order from best to worst rank. Then pick again in reverse order back and fourth until everything is gone.
