Torkil Mux and Swarm Tactics

By Cremate, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Yes, I do know that pilot skill altering abilities are a classic, they have there own private FAQ entry and there is a ton of threads on them, however... I could not find one on this specific interaction.

Swarm Tactics copies your PS to another ship within R1, with the potential of making chains of PS increases. The interaction with Torkil Mux is completely straightforward if Mux has initiative and applies his alteration first, because then the would-be Swarm Tactic using ship has already gotten PS0 by the time it might consider using Swarm Tactics.

But what if it is the other way around and Swarm Tactics have been applied first? Would PS0 then spread through your ranks like wildfire via Swarm Tactics?

  1. Ship A (PS8) uses Swarm Tactics to make B PS8
  2. Torkil Mux makes Ship A PS0
  3. What happens next to the PS of ship B - Remains at 8 or reduced to 0?

It basically boils down to whether we consider Swarm Tactics to be copied at the time of it being activated, and thus set, or whether it is continuously 'refreshed'.

On a, perhaps, conceptually related note the Rules Reference (p.8) does speak of how card abilities that have already been triggered can remain in play even if a ship is destroyed and removed from the game. This could argue in favour of either interpretation above, though, as on one hand it tells us that an ability can continue even after a ship is removed (such as drawing on the destroyed ships PS for Swarm Tactics, Roark, Mux, etc), but on the other hand it also stresses that the effect has already been triggered.

I recall seeing this discussed, potentially even with a rules reply from FFG, but my GoogleFoo has failed me and thus I toss it here.

Mux triggers at the end of the Activation phase and Swarm Tactics triggers after that, at the beginning of the Combat phase. So unless Mux targets the first ship in the chain (or only ship with Swarm Tactics), the target ship could get it's PS raised again by Swarm Tactics from another ship.

Thanks!

Ha! So it is just a simple matter of different timing windows making this entirely redundant. I didn't look at the card, nor when I wrote the above, but only went with my opponent stating that it was at the start of combat. I clearly should have because it would have saved time speculating about initiative in that match as well as the time posting this (and others reading it).
