Ships, Maps, Weapons

Are you using PS and creating different layers for buildings?

The one city map looks like Mos Eisley from SW Galaxies MMO, almost to a tee. Great Work!

I do all of it in photoshop, been using that for over 20 years professionally, though i have tried other programs for fun, I just always go back to it. Thanks for the compliment on Eisley, man i do miss that game, but pre overhaul... when they tried to be WoW, i finally had to give it up.

Yeah I played pre NGE as well, soon as it went to NGE I sold my account for $1500, top Weaponsmith on Kauri server at the time, bringing in tons of creds each day with Krayt Dragon Tissue market monopolized for FW5 Pistols. Had the best quality resources from my guild SITH, ever to hit any planet and a perfect schematic.

I'm self taught with PS, use a Surface Pro3 now, usually to doodle.

Your awesome at what you're doing! Thanks!

So is Photoshop fairly easy to use? I know my way around a pc but never used any art packages at all!

I made a point of being in the center of my city when the servers went dark.

For a year or so recently, I was playing on a pre-CU emulator, rebuilding my original character and a few others. Even rebuilt the player city. But, I didn't have the proper time to devote to running it, and found myself on the receiving end of a hostile takeover from some of the more prominent citizens. I couldn't fault their reasoning, but did have a problem with their method. It pretty much soured me on going back to the game, but I'm sure I will at some point.

The major hard part is vocabulary and options. Photoshop has a set of terms you have to know to understand what function you need to look for and what menu it's probably buried in. And there's so many things it can do it can be hard to figure out what you want. Beyond that it's just typical talent, skill, and a steady hand, which ain't that bad since there's also a nice undo sys.

That's my biggest issue with GIMP. GIMP's UI is not at all intuitive, at least not to me. As a (very) casual user, the price tag is attractive but the learning curve is steep. On the other hand, if I actually paid for a program like Photoshop I might be more motivated to become more familiar with its capabilities.

Ruakar, that looks a bit like the Ebon Hawk. I don't know if that's intentional or not, but it's a distinguished place to start!

The problem with Photoshop nowadays is that it has what seems like a low buy-in price, but stop paying it and you lose access to it. It adds up to quite a bit ($50/month is $600/year) which can be cut down a bit to $20/month if you have a student email address, but then you aren't supposed to use any of the apps for commercial work.

Agreed, though it's $20/month for just Photoshop iirc, $50 is for the full creative suite.

GIMP is a powerful free alternative (but it's still missing key functions to be really competitive) but yeah, it's a little oddly laid out so there's a bit of a learning curve. Still, if you don't got the coin it's not bad....

The $20/month I was talking about is the student price (which is 60% off the list price) and is for all apps. If you just want photoshop as a student, then the price is $10/month.

Yep, was a request from AceSolo for his players. :)

That's one of the reasons why I'm still using CS4. I own the hardcopy disks, bought and paid for. Yes, it cost a lot up front, but I definitely prefer that over "Subscription".

As for map and floorplan making, however. I would suggest using Adobe Illustrator instead of Photoshop. For those of you who don't know, Illustrator is the Vector-based illustration counterpart to Photoshop (InDesign being the page-layout part of the triumvirate). Illustrator is what's used for things like logos, type, and other vector-based drawings (as opposed to raster-based photo-manipulation).

And fantastic work it is too & also very much appreciated... She's called The Echo Rising, she's old, she's quirky but my players have grown to love her.... And, she's got them out of a number of very close scrapes so far :)

Really looking forward to seeing the finished version :)

Amazing stuff!

Is there a way where we can donate / contribute? I'm sure that there are tons of things that the forum would love to have done...

Is there a Patreon for this work? Or a GoFundMe?

If he accepts money for work that is derivative to LFL property, he could come under trouble with copyright for doing it.

Exactly, This is why I can't take commissions on "Fan Art". Technically, it's copyright infringement.

I accept no work that is distinctly star wars. I have been a professional artist for 22 years and quite familiar with the copywrite laws, Star wars is something i do as a hobby. the commissions i do take money for are all custom work, for folks that just need maps, ships and help filling out their own ideas. I have even worked on 3 projects "movie related" for Disney and quite familiar with their system, "and eagerness to enforce their ownership of their IP's

I guess it went past some peoples radar that this Thread was specifically why i post my "Star Wars" items here for all to take and enjoy in your own games, because to charge for that would infringe on copy write laws... the other work that is not copy written is not posted here. And that is what my Patreon is for.

Not only do i have Generic Sci Fi Items but entire bases, stations and world maps like the Lothal stuff i posted for FREE. Here are two examples of things i sell from those sets. Which now are also given away for free with this post. heh. Below them are those items and the map tiles (can be configured and placed by users) for a base in that set.

I think it should also go with out saying This is technically an advertisement for my work as i wont post a link to it here. I dont use FF forums to drum up work because that is also a breach of their TOS. And a correction to someones previous post. Star wars is not property of FF, its licensed through Disney. so in the hypothetical that i HAD been selling xwings or yt-1300's it would be under Disney's jurisdiction and not FF. All FF could do would be to say, "its a no no to advertise that work here" then report to Disney as it is there IP.

What kind of rock do you have to live under now to not know about copy write laws. After 22 years its pretty clear to me but Just watch a YouTube video now days and someone is talking about it. Fan art also falls under the current CW laws, true it does depend on the license holder and their level of DBery, but you can draw some character or licensed material until you are blue in the face, you just cant solicit that work. Then there are the grey Areas too, which i wont deny exist... One example from my own past was when i was working for Disney and we were Sued by EA because a letter in a Title Logo resembled a letter in their Title logo.. And this happens far more commonly than you think.

Sorry for the Snarky post, just annoying that as i stated this thread it was all intended for Good Will to the EoTE players.

Ahh, the joys of Trademark vs Copyright. In this case I think it was EA protecting some of their trademarks, which are under a completely different set of rules. Same reason that Intel sued a yoga company for their "Yoga Inside" logo that had the words inside a blueish swishy circle like Intel's "Intel Inside" logo. Failure to sue the little guys (and generally just get a settlement of "Yep, this isn't infringement. Move along." from the courts) can prevent one from suing the big infringers and can even cause a trademark to become public domain for failing to actively protect it.

This was exactly the case. The O was in a circle similar to one of their titles, and eventually this just ended up in Settlement and a pay out to EA... I should have said before, I appreciate your point of view, and I was a little rude in my response and i apologize. I get touchy about CW stuff because IMO its a subject that goes bad quickly, I am extremely careful with this for obvious reasons. Thanks for sharing Kallabecca. :)

I just wanted to say that I, for one, am very thankful of Ruakar and other forum-goers that share their efforts such as these for us all to benefit! I didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest, only show appreciation. Ruakar, if you do end up doing some generic sci fi work, I'm sure there are plenty of us out there that would gladly contribute.

Afternoon everybody.. I havent done anything for the community in a few days so I thought i would do a Hutt Fighter this morning. Enjoy, If anyone has an idea of its stats please post them here because i havent found it in the books. If i am wrong please correct me and give the book and page number. :)

To me, that looks like a Mandalmotors M3-A Scyk Interceptor. See http://swrpg.viluppo.net/transportation/starships/1823/

BTW, if you don’t mind having your artwork used on the Viluppo SWRPG site, then please let us know. There’s lots of ships we don’t have art for, and Wookieepedia can only take us so far with some of them.

If we had someone producing good quality art that was okay with us using it (with proper credit, of course), then we’d be happy to do that.

certainly, please go ahead, and a "made by Ruak" would be hugely appreciated :)
