Official ruling on order of defense token spending?

By Thraug, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

For the life of us, our group could not find where the official ruling is, if any exist, on whether or not you have to declare ALL of the defense tokens you will be using before seeing the results of any of them. I recall the ruling being in either a FAQ or someone's reply to a FFG submitted question but I cannot find it!!

During a rather large attack against Admonition, we were trying to explain how spending an Evade token works with a Redirect token on the same ship, and also with Admonition's upgrade card but we simply could not find the core/official ruling on this, other than the old DWRR post stating (I think):

  • Evade is roll and resolved before deciding whether to use Redirect and Brace
  • Then, knowing the result of any Evade reroll/cancel, the defending player can then decide to use Redirect and/or Brace
  • Any time before damage is applied, the defending Admonition player can use the Admonition ability

With the exception of Evade, which you can declare AND see the result of, you have to declare all token use at the same time (then they resolve during the appropriate step).

Admo works a bit like Evade actually. You declare, discard the token and the cancel takes place right away. Note that of you spend a Redir token first, then discard it with Admo, it will still take place at the appropriate time.

Well for one, The FAQ explicitly states that you do indeed Spend and resolve the Evade Token before deciding on any other Defense Token usage, and the same will apply to the Scatter too.

Furthermore, everything else at the "Spend Defense Tokens" step is simultaneous, and as we know, when its simultaneous, you may choose the order...

Because the other three Tokens do not resolve until later... You do need to spend them during that step..

So you can spend a Redirect , as GK has said, during the Spend Defense Tokens step, state that it has been spent, flip it to the exhausted side as per usual - and then discard it due to Admonition ,for Admonitions Effect....
