Horror checks - what to use?

By mauriciorjbr, in Mansions of Madness

Hello all!

While playing today, a horror check description said something like: Do a horror check, if you fail take 2 damage and 2 horror (or something like it). What do we check against? Usually it is against a difficulty number, but this time we got confused...

Use the app: from the monster drawer select the monster within range that has the highest horror rating and the app gives you an option to do a horror check and tells you what to check against.

Hey Sharmask, that was what we did, however, the text read: Take 2 horror and 1 damage. Is the difficulty 2, 1, 3 (2+1)...?

Most likely what you missed was the word "Negates" after the Stat. So, for instance, if you had "Will Negates" (showing the symbol, not the word for Will, obviously), each success you rolled would let you ignore 1 of either horror or damage.

So, if you rolled:

3 (or more) successes - you could ignore both the 2 horror and the damage,

2 successes - you could choose to negate 1 horror and 1 damage, or 2 horror

1 success - you could choose to negate either 1 horror or 1 damage

Also, if you skipped it - you can click on settings and review the text in the message log.

And lastly in addition to what everyone said, sometimes the horror check just says "take x damage and y horror" with no test negates. In those cases, you just take that much damage. Those usually occur at the end if you weren't fast enough in the case and some terrible monster appears.
