Another newcomer! Looking for fun ideas from limited purchases.

By infyrana, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey all,

So I finally managed to get a demo of X-Wing today, liked the concept enough to pickup up the newer (Force Awakens) Core Set and the Inquisitor's Tie Adv Pt. I'll also be picking up Sabine's Tie Fighter as soon as it's available in order to have a small collection of two sides for friends to join in. I've no intention ("Mistakes might be made") of mass buying or investing heavily since since this will be on a shoestring budget - plus I will be buying both sides initially to allow friends to join in. I've read about lots of the different card choices and which models they come from etc, but it's an expensive mindfield - so sadly only the most highly recommended items will be taken in :)

Onto the reason for this thread! Please could I seek your advice for some fun and functional list ideas based on my limited options?

If it will help - a little down the line I intend on purchasing Slave 1 (that's a definite, big Mandalorian fan) and making a choice between one of the following: - Millenium Falcon -or- HotR -or- YT-2400 -or- Ghost.

I've read a lot of suggestions for Engine Upgrades which is something that the HotR pack with its new Mill Falcon and T-70 does not include, but then would I get more fun mileage out of the other options? I have been tempted with one more Tie Fighter variant (SF / Adv / Interc') if I needed to even the points and I know a second core set comes recommended. I've also considered Scum for the Manda' and Asajj options but dislike some of the ships, given that the Core Set comes with TIE Fighters, I thought it best to avoid this direction for now.

Your help and advice is most welcomed, thank you!

Think maybe I asked the question wrongly ! :D

Ideally I'm just looking for a recommendation on a single large (and small) ship for Rebels that would give me a good base of cards. In addition, how I could use those cards to make lists for both fleets please?

For each faction, these are the best value for money:

Rebels: K-wing

Empire: First Order TIE Expansion

Scum: Protectorate Starfighter

Each of these sets comes with a PS8 or 9 ready to hit the table with the upgrades necessary to be fun and effective. Of course you should still buy whatver appeals to you.

In casual play, proxy the cards you don't own. Here's a good example of why:

The Rebel large ships all require upgrades from different sets to be useable. YT-2400 needs Engine Upgrade, which comes in YT-1300. Both YT models need Kanan Jarrus, who comes in the Ghost Expansion, which in turn really likes the Twin Laser Turrets that only comes in the K-wing.

Since you're focused on getting another Rebel next, I highly recommend the K-wing. Try out Miranda Doni with Twin Laser Turret and Conner Nets (all of which come in that set.)

Thank you for your reply jmswood!

I'm glad you mentioned the Protectorate for Scum purchases, this is something I wanted to ask about down at some point. I've been reconsidering Scum options because of the characters available. It would be nice to field some Protectorates for Mandalorians, maybe Slave 1 (Most Wanted set come with the pilots I believe), or something like Shadow Caster for Asajj/Ketsu/Sabine etc.

I'll add the FO Tie expansion to my list, does the SF version come recommended too, or not highly enough ?

Regarding Rebels, it's not that I'm set on getting a Rebel ship next, it's that I was looking for more of a single one off iconic ship with a nice selection of usable upgrades. I'm not familiar with the K-Wing in SW and personally not very fond of it at all even as shelf display - if there is a specific card or two in that set that comes recommended, perhaps I could grab that singularly.

Personally, I really enjoy the TIE/sf. Unfortunately it falls in with the majority of ships that need cards from multiple other sets to be competitve. Again, if you're playing casually, buy the ships you want and proxy the cards you don't have.

I understand your reservations about the K-wing. I waited a year to buy one because it's only in Legends and doesn't even look like a Star Wars ship. I recommend it to other players because the expansion contributes a lot to the game. If you want Rebel and iconic, don't let any bum in a forum (myself included) disuade you from purchasing what you really want.

As a Mandalorian fan, you'll get more out of Scum Boba Fett than Imperial. Proxy the Scum version if the Most Wanted pack is out of your budget right now.

I think if you just want one thing for rebels, your best bet might be to snag the Heroes of the resistance pack when you see it.

(it's supposed to be hitting shelves any day now, I think in some places it already has.)

This nets you probably the most iconic ship you can get for rebels. And from the look of the contents it's going to open up a lot of new options for the t-70 x-wings. (convenient since you already have one of those)

Secondary ship choice would probably be an a-wing. You want rebel aces for the a-wing to reach it's full potential, but it should still do okay without that. And Push the limit (which you get in the a-wing pack) shows up pretty much everywhere. To the best of my knowledge you can only get PTL in the a-wing or in imperial aces.

The y-wing comes a distant third on the pick list for me. Possibly more iconic than the a-wing, but it doesn't get good until you splash out for a twin laser turret (k-wing), and even then it kinda only does one thing. "necessary" upgrades for the y-wing are also locked away in big box sets; Rebel transport & most wanted.

A special mention goes to the arc-170: It's definitely not the correct purchase right now, but later on down the line (read: When you have a second core set (preferably the old one) and a PTL from somewhere) the ship & the cards that come with it will be a great asset.

Thanks again for the updates, I'm derailing myself a little, but if it ends in the right result all is good :)

jmswood, oh you aren't disuading me from anything, I'm a little stubborn at first, but eventually helpful people such as yourself will soon drum into me the worthy choices!

I think I'll do just that, proxy up the Scum Boba Fett for Slave 1. Having fun with Fab's Squadron Builder - looks like you can fill out 100 points with just Protectorate and Slave 1 expansions plus a Boba's Scum pilot card - might be the cheapest solution to try out! I'm not familiar with all the card synergies and best uses, do you have any suggestions here at all please?

namdoolb: thanks, the HotR pack did look like it could be good value at the right price, I've just read little about it and well it works straight out the box etc.

I've always liked the A-Wing, so will definitely keep that in mind for Push the Limits. I like the ARC-170 too, might I ask what's the hold out on this particular choice ? Does it require a lot of other cards for best use or?

Try this:

Fenn Rau (34) - Protectorate Starfighter

Push The Limit (3), Concord Dawn Protector (1), Autothrusters (2)

Boba Fett (44) - Firespray-31

Fearlessness (1), Tail Gunner (2), Glitterstim (2)

It's 78 points of Mandalorian deadly, I recommend a third ship, but you could fill up the rest with upgrades.

Norra (the popular choice for the arc-170 pilots) really wants r2-d2 and push the limit in order to shine. She's not terrible straight out of the box, just a little underwhelming without these things.

You'll get a little mileage out of the other pilots, but again they kinda want things that come in other ship packs.
