Anyone ever tries this? It's like Opprotunist but without the stress or the need for a stripped token. When flying with Biggs, Agility dice aren't needed as long as he's around.
Expose and Biggs?
Say it with me folks: Using Expose is worse than a focus action even if you discount the agility penalty. Adding a die does less for your average results than taking the none action literally everyone has, and is free.
Not to mention that Biggs dies, and then you've sunk 4 points into something you want to use even less than you did whilst he was alive.
Expose remains, as ever, terrible.
(except on non Kenkirk Decimators!)
Expose is not your friend, expose is the jerk that bullied you in high school.
Keyan Farlander + Expose + Experimental Interface + Autoblaster Cannon
that works pretty well with Biggs.
(except on non Kenkirk Decimators!)
Nope, even then.
You're paying 4 points for a benefit to your attack that you could get by focussing. PTL gives you a better average effect (albeit, a lower maximum effect) for a point less, for instance.
Keyan Farlander + Expose + Experimental Interface + Autoblaster Cannon
that works pretty well with Biggs.
Expose is primary weapon only.
I forgot iir isn't like Opprotunist... it's an action never mind

You need to do a lot to make expose worth it - in general here are the issues...
Expose costs 4 points
It takes an action
It takes an ept slot.
It lowers your agility.
Biggs solves the agility issue - while he is alive...
Consider expose like boost - is it better to focus with a 3 die gun, or boost into range 1 for 4 dice?
Probability wise, Boosting - 4 dice at 50% chance per die is expecting 2 hits.
Focus is 3 dice at at 75% chance - expecting 2.25 hits. - Focus can also be used on defense if its not needed on attack.
So, taking the expose action by itself, just gives us a chance at 4 hit results, which focus won't do for us, but it's likely doing less overall damage. Now consider that focus is free and expose is 4 points. - if you assume that 2 points should equal about 1 damage (Seismic charge etc) we need to have expose giving us 4.25 damage expectation - (or , 2 additional damage in a turn) - Crack shot gives us a higher bar, of 1 damage for 1 point.) So, most of the time, crack shot is a way better buy than expose.
So - where can you use expose? There are a few niche places where you can negate most of the issues with it - Consider the following...
Corran Horn + BB8 + Expose + Experimental interface + FCS.
Lets assume you're flying good enough to negate the agility penalty with positioning (which bb8 helps us with a bit) - we can roll push for expose - giving us a stress, and then move, negating the stress. (Expose + EI is equivalent dice to an HLC - but is slightly better since it works at range 1, although it isn't quite as good at range 3) Then we take our action - say a focus. Corran is now double tapping, and firing with modification + expose. twice in a round.
Compare +1 die with action vs +0 dice with 2 actions...
4dice + TL = 3 expected hits.... 3dice + Focus + Target lock is about 2.8 expected hits. The double tap is doing that twice - giving us a .4 damage bonus - its slightly higher than ptl on corran. So if you can do that 5 times, (10 rounds) - you've got your 2 damage from expose. It increases a bit more at range 1 - (giving this build of corran an extra .75 damage per range 1 double tap) - which is 3 double taps to make up that expose value - but now you're not counting that EI cost.
So, it can be worth it, you can get value from expose - but you have to combine it with an additional action, avoid the evades, and have it be less trouble than other, better epts. - Consider Corran with marksmanship - that double tap is nearly as good as the expose version - but doesn't require the 3 points for EI (though with EI, you now get to pull an evade or focus for defense - and really have a tankier corran build at 1 less point.
Generally you need a way to make EI or PTL + Expose work. If there's anywhere unique to put it, it's probably on dengar, the Tie/SF (The only other double primary double taps in the game) - if you had some way to modify shots (howlrunner + EI + expose quickdraw - there you can actually get 4 uses of expose at once... )
or ARC 170 - specifically r2-d6 Thane Kyrell - it both pumps the rear and front arc attacks, and when paired with biggs forces his free expose,
The only way I've made Expose work is on Keyan with EI escorted by Biggs. This gave him a 4 die attack that would usually take PTL+HLC to get off every turn so it saved some points.
But I think Rage fits him much better now. 1 action gets you all the goodies he needs.
Expose is caca. Don't use it.
Interestingly tho, dispite its downsides Expose seems appropriately priced.
Consider that it was not an action but a permanent ability, also that it did not lower your agility. Then looking a the Punishing One title or Outrider (+Heavy laser) we should be looking at 12-13pt and needing it to be unique.
Dropping the unique aspect, but lowing agility, is difficult to price. But making it an action allows you to deside when to use the ability, while taxes you the loss of the action. However:
Experimental Interface+Expose = 7pt
Which considering a Heavy Laser canon is also 7pt the price seems right.
The price for expose seems to be right, there is just no use-case for expose and that is based on it not being undercost and strong competition on the slots and high cost.
Edited by SEApocalypsePredator is always better than Expose because it doesn't take an action, therefore you can either reposition or focus while having an offensive re-roll and you don't lose an agility for the pleasure. It's also one point cheaper.
Again my bad, I thought it worked like Opprotunist, so you could have a Focus and an extra die, but yeah as is that will never do.
Indeed. Expose costs your action, and lowers your agility.
Let me be clear - I'm not saying it's a 'good' elite ability. But it can be made use of.
For it to be "worth it" you need to mitigate both requirements.
Note that Expose is no better than target locking or focusing but if you already have a target lock or focus , it adds more damage than doing the 'other one'.
Biggs does indeed handle the 'lowered agility' problem, but you still need an extra action to make much use of it.
Probably the closest I've seen to making it useful are the following three ideas:
- Rear Admiral Chiraneau, Expose, Gunner, Experimental Interface - the Rear Admiral already has a 'partial focus' baked into his attack, so experimental interface lets you boost your primary value and get a target lock. The fact that Expose works for both attacks is good and the loss of agility is meaningless anyway.
- Thane Kyrell, Alliance Overhaul Expose, Tail Gunner/Gunner, R2-D6 (plus Biggs) - Biggs being shot at means Thane doesn't need his agility (not that losing a single green dice matters much anyway), and also triggers Thane's ability, giving you the free action you want to trigger expose. In the ARC's rear arc, it again already has a partial focus baked in, so you do actually do more damage using Expose with an ARC's rear arc than target locking.
- [Epic Games only] Youngster, Expose (with Howlrunner and 10 Black Squadron Pilots with Crack Shot in tow) - This is limited in application in 'normal' games because you're buying 40 points of support ships. In a 300-400 point game, this nets you an alpha strike which makes Contracted Scouts wet themselves with fear.
The Corran Horn build is a nice idea - I'd just be concerned because you're taking away his agility, and an E-wing is designed to rely on green dice to survive...Plus losing R2-D2 and engine upgrade is going to hurt.
I think Expose in Heroes of the Aturi Cluster can be good, especially on an A-wing. If you are out of their arc and you know you will be, then you can pick when to use it. If you have Outmaneuver and PTL, you can use it and get your dice modification. Or Predator. I just keep thinking of being at R1 of an enemy Tie Fighter and being out of arc. Expose will give you 4 dice and PTL will give you a Focus or TL. Then, Outmaneuver will reduce their agility down to. I think that's a good build!
