I have heard a good deal about the Biggs tax and the need for Biggs lately. Is he just the Rebel Palpatine? He offers excellent support and defense and is most typically seen with 2 or 3 ships, and is anticipated to be indirectly influential to the game.
Biggs: The Rebel Palp?
Biggs only works at Range 1, not any range. He's still susceptible to both bad play and bad luck. He has a hard counter in the form of swarms, and pretty much any gun in the game can hit him.
He's good, but he ain't Sheev.

Biggs is around because high offense is just crippling to the vast majority of rebel ships, most of which just cant hope to reach soontir/x7 defenses esp not for a similar price
And ofc no palp to help
He's definitely the Rebel go-to if your looking for a defensive advantage for your ships. I love flying T-65's but I rarely use Biggs because he forces my hand movement-wise far too much for my mostly hyper-active brain to handle. But he is, for the lack of a better word, the Rebel Palp-eee.

This is interesting. I also love the T-65 but have the same problem with Biggs. My tactics can't be toobinteresting when I have to stay close to him. I love to force my enemy to either break their formation and lose focus fire, or stay in a cluster to hit my one guy, while I use wide angles to keep the pressure on, often shooting at range 2.

No.
Palp makes good ships better.
Biggs makes bad ships usable.
He's more like rebel autothrusters or x7. A blanket fix for the general averageness of rebel ships.
I've said it a thousand times, about to be a thousand and one:
If the Rebel ships that are practically married to Biggs(ARCs, T-65s, Z-95s, etc etc) were capable of survival on their own, Biggs would not be a necessary part of those Rebel squads. If you gave an ARC-170 a means with with to generate defensive tokens with relative ease, Biggs would disappear from ARC squads in favor of stuff that can do more damage, because he's less necessary.
See, if Biggs was an Imperial pilot, you wouldn't stick him with anything, not even TIE Swarms, because that's 26 points of ship that's supposed to die, when you could just get 2 more TIE Fighters for the same cost instead. The only reason Rebels do it is because 26 points of death is better than 100 points of death.

26pts is 6hp Biggs with 1pt 'mech and IA. So, for 26pts, I can get a 3-die attack ship that can guarantee that the enemy cannot shoot at Howlrunner until its dead* and all I give up is 2 2-die attack, 3hp ships** that can't protect her?
Sign me up.
Seriously. If there was an Imperial Biggs that had a dial that could keep in formation with TIE Fighters/ln I would run it every time.
*or some other extreme funky flying
**there is some action economy lost, but really, not with swarms

Would it make Swarms top-tier again, though? Would the protection of Howlrunner make TIE Swarm any better against the best lists in the game? No, and you know it. It still gets destroyed by Alpha lists and Palp Aces, and Dengaroo, which is my point. If the list that could possibly get the absolute best use out of Biggs arent even really any better by his inclusion, can Biggs really be that good?

What swarm pilots are you flying against? Howl/Black/Crack swarms are doing nicely right now. Drop two of the Academies for this theoretical ImpBiggs and yes, it would be an even more powerful list than it already is.
Biggs is a sad crutch that Rebel players are forced to utilize to be competitive. He's not fun. He causes balance issues for Rebels. He's just sprung up again because Rebels got more jousty ships in the latest wave.

But not THAT much more powerful. You wouldn't see an enormous increase in the presence of TIE Swarms. I don't see all that many TIE Swarms around, to be honest. I know it's decent, but it's not top or really even high tier.

Swarms are counter productive to winning in time limits, otherwise they would see far more competitive play.

Which is why the main variation on a swarm you see is the 'Crack Shot' swarm, I guess.
Biggs is nice, but he's specifically useful where he's protecting something more valuable and/or more fragile than he is (such as elite X-wings) or he's 'drawing' an alpha strike. Even in a TIE swarm....questionable. Yes, Howlrunner is nice. but spending 26 points to protect 18 points seems a bit....erm.
If I was putting him anywhere in an Imperial list (if it was possible) I'd probably take TIE/sf - relatively fragile ships that you can't target until you burn through Biggs - giving Quickdraw a chance to rage against the machine.

There.. i fixed it for you, Hobo.
I usually focus fire and get Biggs the hell off the board as soon as possible. If you're going to have no choice but to fire at him anyway, you might as well make them good shots you actually want to take. Then you're not spending half the game tap dancing around him trying to shoot at whoever he's protecting.

Go Biggs or go home!
with a name like darklighter how can he be a rebel..... he should have been a sith lord
