This was about 50% of my reaction to TFA, the other half being the obligatory "SQEEEEE" at finally having new Star Wars stuff. It's now mostly this.

I don't mind this having TIEs and Vader and all that in Rouge One because it's set around the same time as them. TFA has no excuse. The prequels had new ships, new planet types, new conflicts; some elements were executed a little goofily, but still new. TFA was all of the old models and plots, only with a new paintjob.

I think when the J.J. was told "We want old-style Star Wars" what he heard was "We want old-looking Star Wars". So he made everything look basically the same as ANH except with better graphics, and took no risks with the story. Even Anakin turning evil in RotS had more sink-in time and consequential follow-up. At points TFA was like following a checklist.

"There are rebels in space! And bad guys! Moving on."

"And we blew up a planet, oh no! Moving on."

"And we killed an old favorite character! Oh no! Moving on."

"And look, there's they guy we were looking for! Circular shot! The end."

Rouge One way be another rehash of old stuff; but it's a rehash that makes sense, and it can't be worse than TFA. The droids might not be as cute, but I think it'll be a better movie.
