Final Rogue One Trailer

By DailyRich, in X-Wing

So, I guess I am the only one who looks forward to really bad acting based on that trailer?

Guess there is hope for that movie if it is just me. ^-^

I expect bad acting and bad lines. It's normal in a Star Wars film. The level of bad though is hopefully acceptable.

Beautiful... but the scenery shifts so much it's a jarring cut. There are towers there the X-Wings are flying by, the guy screams, then they fly through structure (one crashes) but there are no turbolaser towers to be scene... uhg!

Ooh, found them. Towers are on the outer ring... still a jarring cut.

That might not be the sequence of cuts in the final film; in fact I'd bet it's not. Trailers usually splice together different elements into what appears as a single sequence but when the film comes out, isn't. I would wager you'll find it's different in the actual film.

I won't take that bet. It can go either way with trailers. Still seems jarring on its own which makes it an interesting choice. Not wrong or right. Ex-editing experience in me making observations with my limited experience in Post.

Even if it is the final cut, the chaos comes from the gif looping, which makes the takes seemout of order.

In the actual trailer the sequence is coherent - first three X-wings fly through the inner structure, one crashes, the rest head towards the outer ring, cut to the pilot screaming, cut back to the two X-wings flying over the outer ring.

Yeah, finally got to watch the trailer. All I had to go on was the gif!

I kinda feel the story they revealed takes away from Jyn's potential. Instead of pure rebelling for the sake of freedom, hatred, whatever... It now looks like a classic 'save my father' storyline. I know that's oversimplifying, but that's the impression from the trailer. I liked the other one better.

Rogue One is definitely looking very promising.

It will almost definitely be better than TFA, which is my least favorite star wars film (I do like it though).

I think it has a good shot at top 3 in my list, maybe even top spot over ROTS...though that would be tough to do.

Oh my gods! It looks awesome!!!!! Dec 16 can't get here fast enough!

I definitely did not see really bad acting in the trailer. For one, its all very short moments, and two, most of the reactions are clearly to parts of scenes that we do not see - but I thought they did fine throughout it.

Well, she is. And would be anyway, even if we went with your idea.

Lemme put it to you this way: she is rebelling because she hates the Empire, she hates the Empire because of some drama with her father, and she wants to be free of the constant oversight and influence of an entity she hates.

In any story, the why, even if we don't know what it is at the beginning, is what drives the actions of characters.

Here, you can try it yourself.

"Once apon a time there was a little girl named Jyn, who's parents smelled like Juniper berries and couldn't spell very well. One day her mother died because ________________ and left her and her father all alone on the farm. During this time her relationship with her surviving parent became ________________ because he ________________ and also because Jyn ________________. This would leave an indelible impact on her personality and grow to define the person she would become in the future."

"One day the Empire came to their farm. Jyn was curious and looked out just in time to see them ________________ ________________. Then they ________________ and ________________. Jyn would never forget this, and never forgive the Empire for what they had done."

"Jyn grew up, and became a ________________ in the town of ________________. There she learned to ________________ and became the best ________________ in the town while becoming friends with ________________. When the Empire showed up, she knew she had to do something. She gathered her closest associates and ________________ into a ________________, narrowly escaping."

"And so began her quest for revenge on the Empire."

Fill in the blanks with what you think would be most interesting; and BOOM instant story - just like those old MadLibs thingies. ^_^

That said...... it's a **** good time to be a Star Wars fan

It IS! I remember in the 90s, I thought it was pretty cool that I could buy a calendar with pictures from these old movies that I really liked. A calendar! One time I found a Star Wars mug in a gift shop, and that was super unusual!

Now you can get Star Wars EVERYTHING!

Is anyone else getting misty eyed?

I mean, for this guy, Star Wars: The Tissue Paper!

sku_001_01.png

That's First Order Toilet Paper! :P

That's First Order Toilet Paper! :P

How do you use the three seashells?

What a great great trailer.

I'm still quite fearful of that:

<<

We put the film again in postproduction and assembling, because the directors version seems to be too dark, violent and not enought "familiar" for the the producers.

>>

Anyway, the trailer just give me an *****ion. It's realy impresive.

But... it is important for me that Jan Ors / Jyn Erso will not be a singer popular in the whole galaxy, imprisoned by annoyng a imperial officier. This would put the script too close to Top Secret.

Does this forum censor "erection"?

But... How are we supposed to talk about the Eifel Tower (a mighty erection indeed).

Oh... it doesn't.

What the hell word were you saying?

LOL

I said the father angle lessens Jyn's potential story, not that it meant her story is going to suck. They may even spin this to be the best version of this classic theme, or a tragic version twisted by the power of the Empire. I won't even guess what they've done with the script.

Relax. I'll likely love the movie anyway. I actually very much enjoyed TFA. Ok, the prequels hurt pretty badly but the third one I can enjoy if I remember to turn it off before the losing the will to live scene. None of the Star Wars movies are perfect, but they are firmly ingrained into my being.

Kidding, kidding, I kid. Glad you got laugh out of it. :P

I'm not too worried about the movie being enjoyable, I'm sure it'll be a blast! I'm not sure what better story Jan would have been freed up for with out the father angle.

Can't relax. Too excited. Agree to disagree on the prequels.

The eponymous Rogue One title refers to the rebels' ship then?

To think Return of the Jedi could have been called "Shuttle Tydirium."

It's a callsign for the group. Ends up being what they call themselves or others call them, rather than the ship.

Ends up being a rallying call.

Ends up being the name of The Alliance's most successful squadron ever.

The canon is still out on that... technically Wedge commanded Red Squad at Endor, and Rogue Group flew speeders at Hoth, and has not been canonized as an x-wing squadron. Wedge HAS formed ans flown Phantom squad, consisting of washouts and retired pilots.

What I really like about the trailer is the emotional weight of the film. Just looking at that and you can see the despair of the Rebels...and then the hope of the Rebels and what they can do. Besides all the really cool action, I think this movie will really reel you in with the emotional pull of the film. I think it's going to be an awesome movie.

To me looks more like the classic:
[POTENTIAL SPOILER]
<<
- I hate the Empire with passion... They took away my family when I was young, I fought angainst them since then and I saw countless atrocities they made.
- Now I find my father is alive, but working for them, but not as a slave, instead he's their chief engineer, with a nice uniform and all. He is designing and building for them the most awesome superweapon of all, a weapon they could use to enslave the entire galaxy... Ohhhhh the rage, now I wanna kill my father more than Edipo!
- But finally I discover that my father was betraying the Empire the whole time, and, as chief engineer, he designed a flaw, a backdoor, a troy horse, that would let a single fighter vessel to destroy the entire station with a well place proton torpedo. And, in his last moment, he sacrifice himself to provide me with the precise information of that hidden flaw...
And in the meantime, Disney put a patch in one of the gapping holes of the Ep.IV "Why the death star have such an easy to repair weak point?"

If it has a space battle with capital ships, I'm good. Which from a few screen grabs from the trailer, it might.

Dang it. And I'm stuck at work and won't be home to tune in for another 9 hours...

What? No smartdevice? How much are you getting paid working back there in 2005?

Believe it or not, I only just got a cell phone two months ago. Haven't had one in over a decade before that. Still running low bandwidth though so clicking those new fancy fangled moving pictures hurts the wallet.

Yes, I'm used to all the jokes.

Possible! I was reviewing only the trailer for what I saw. I think you're putting a bit more interpretation and inserting pieces you know from other sources, where as I reviewed the trailer on it's own. That does NOT make you wrong.

The story the trailer tells is:

-A girl is traumatized by the Empire taking her father away at a young age (the flashback)

-She clearly ends up on the wrong end of the law for it (the jail cell)

-The Rebellion pulls her in, tells her that her father is not only alive but helping it design a super weapon (rescue, and briefing)

-She takes charge of her small team (she's the one inspiring them), intends to rescue her father (said as much)

-Through this mission her team can save the Rebellion and give hope to the galaxy (as spoken by another character)

The last trailer felt ... darker, grittier, more of a struggle for their group - right down to the final scene where she's limping down the catwalk, blaster in hand, and a TIE Fighter rises into view facing her. It tells a different story that's a more desperate struggle vs the Empire. It seemed like a desperation move to bring her in from the way she's escorted with cuffs into the next scene with the Rebel command staff - it seemed like a desperation move to trust her, with some of the command staff not so sure it's a good choice.

Neither are right or wrong - neither likely tell much of the full story of the movie nor are they supposed to. Trailers are designed to tell a story of their own, to provide a hook to draw you into the show. Both these trailers do this quite well. My personal preference for the darker trailer has no bearing on anything!

I am not expecting the team to make it out alive.

I honestly think that the scene in the previous trailer, with Jyn walking towards the rising TIE, to be the climax of the film, a last ditch effort to beam a transmission to a waiting Tantive IV. After that, the team is wiped out. I don't forsee a happy ending.

I would love that ending.

There have been three Rogue One trailers: the teaser and the two story trailers. The last two came out AFTER the reshoots. So if you're seeing a difference in tone between the two, that's indicative of how the trailers were cut, not the tone of the film.

And it is possible Jyn goes from bitter, reckless, laissez-faire scoundrel to committed Rebel over the course of the film. I seem to recall some other Star Wars character doing a similar thing...

Without a doubt they are going to mention why the Death Star has a major weakness. However it is an exhaust port, it does seem to serve an actual purpose. I truly hope they don't pull a Galen Erso was a traitor the entire time rather then he indicate a point on the station that could be exploited to destroy the Death Star.
