List Confusion

By Rolotamasi, in X-Wing Squad Lists

One thing that I admit to having a problem with is list confusion. I don't have a problem picking something to fly, quite the opposite I have too many lists I want to fly. I have always had a problem with this. Even back in my WoW days I would have more alts then I knew what to do with. I enjoy the creation steps but have a hard time sticking with one thing. Call it ADD if you will but there are too many good ship/upgrade combos to stick to one list.

That being said I realize the only way to get better (good isn't an option yet, just better) is to get reps in with a list, or list archetype. I am an avid podcast listener and forum reader so I have a good grasp on what is good and viable these days. I have a more than sufficient collection to the point I can make and fly nearly every list (notable exceptions are no CR 90 so no Han crew, though I do have C-3P0 and no T-70 expansion so no integrated astromech, though this changes once HotR comes out). So my challenge to the forum is this, since I can't decide for myself would you all be willing to help? Below is a list of what I think is good currently. I know as soon as any puts down 5 lists the first thing is to suggest a 6th. That's not what I'm here for. I have 11 lists here with the basics detailed (assume a pilot is using its "standard" upgrades i.e. Soontir/push/title/AT/SD) and I want to know what I should get my reps in for practice to prepare for the upcoming regional season. I tried to do it by assigning a number and letting the RNG decide 30 times. The order below is that order.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Lock Stock - Vessery/Omega Leader/Inquisitor

Imp Aces - Vessery/Quickdraw/Omega Leader

AsajjYs - Asajj/2 TLT thugs

Palp Aces - Soontir & Vessery

PartyBossk - Bossk/Fenn/2 BMST Zs

AsajjC - Asajj/IG88C

BigArcs - Biggs/Nora/Stramm

Palp Aces - Soontir & Quickdraw

Imp Aces - Soontir/Whisper/Omega Leader

DoubleCaster - Asajj/Ketsu

GhostyStress - Lothal/Zeb/Stramm

I used to have the exact same problem you describe! I really love flying all kinds of different things and I rarely stick to a single list for more than a few games at a time.

My solution: get on VASSAL. Now I play x-wing at least once or twice per week (sometimes more). I've flown everything released and even some unreleased stuff numerous times (that's one of the best parts about VASSAL----getting to try stuff you haven't bought yet).

I don't see how someone else telling you what to fly can be helpful. If you're like me, you'll fly it once or twice and then get sick of it and want to try something else anyway. But at least now for me, it doesn't matter----I feel so comfortable and confident with any ship, that I can walk into a tournament with zero prep and expect to do decently (even with a list someone were to hand me on the day of).

So yeah, get on VASSAL! Start at the top of your list and fly each one a couple times. In a month or so you'll be an ace ;)

Somehow I doubt it, but thanks for the confidence.

Since I love imperials I would start with their forte: Palp/Fel/Vessery

Fly that at least 5 times, you will get a feel for both how a large based limited arc ship should fly, a tanky defender, and the best arcdodger with the most recent counters ever - Fel.

Take that knowledge and then fly Vess/Quickdraw/OL. With a slight change to flying style you will learn all about the dual arc awesomeness of Quickdraw, as well as how to solo something with OL when he's the last thing on the board.

With the dual arc knowledge fresh I would then fly the BigArcs list. This introduces a slightly different mechanic that you haven't done yet but still building on knowledge you do have: flying together (biggs)

From here I'd jump over to your GhostyStress list, then stick with dual ship lists for a bit:

AsajjC/Ig88C

DoubleCaster

Now you're really starting to get to how things synergize, so I'd go with what I think are your more powerful lists:

Asajj/2TLT Y's

PartyBossk

Lock Stock

And end with of course your strongest imperial lists because you listed 5 imp lists:

Palp/Fel/QD

Fel/Whisper/OL

If you chain them this way, building on the thing you just flew, I think you will have a more in depth knowledge of all these lists and what they can do than just flying them randomly. If you can, put in at least 3 games a piece before moving to the next one. If I had something like this I would only fly one thing each game night or tournament day. Copy down your notes, etc, and soon enough you'll find some new crazy combination!

Edit: For a regional tournament I would take the list you love to fly (even if its not one of the above). You will always do better with something like that then something you don't like, and after those 11 lists you will definitely have found your best list.

Being short on league night and tournaments VASSAL seems to be the way to go. If I did had lists to play against what is the best "gauge'? I have loved the TIE swarm since I first started (10 months ago) and am itching to pat the 7 ship PattiSwarm on the table. Is this a good list to test against? Or not because it isn't an accurate representation of the current meta .

The swarm will likely always be competitive due to the shear number of ships that must be destroyed and the # of attacks per round early on. That being said, it is typically a very taxing list to fly well. My experience is the loss usually come to which ever player makes the fist significant piloting error (Honestly most matches are this way, but the swarm just seems to capitalize or fail in epic fashion). As a guage, I currently fly against defenders or U-Boats. The key in my local is always having a plan for how to approach list types and try hard not to let yourself deviate.
