Haha yes, but I wouldn't mind seeing things like dark troopers and shore troopers in the game. Not to mention folks like the main cast

I'm sick of new variants of Stormtroopers...

LOL... You then never played/read the old West End Games RPG... In one book you had more variants of troopers than we got in IA until now.

I didn't play it, but I'm familiar with the rules. I have the minis rule on PDF. I'm familiar with some of those troopers, and some of them were really dumb, specifically scuba-trooper.

How else is a stormtrooper supposed to breathe underwater?

It isn't that I don't think there are aquatic forces in the Empire, it was that the drawing for these units were nothing more than taking a Stormtrooper and putting a scuba tank and 80s (given the time the games were made) flippers. It was quite uncreative.

I'm confused. You don't like specialized Stormtroopers.

You acknowledge the Empire needs an aquatic force.

You think that their aquatic Stormtroopers need to look more specialized...

I'm sick of new variants of Stormtroopers. It is all a merchandising ploy. If death troopers had existed, then they would have been with Darth Vader in Episode IV. Sand Troopers and "Snow" Troopers have special environmental suits. There is no reason for yet another more different stormtrooper. I'm already sighing with disgust at these jet troopers. There is currently Stormtroopers, Snowtroopers, Heavy Stormtroopers, Jet Troopers, and ISB infiltrators, and there is no doubt in anyone's mind it won't be long before we have Scout Troopers. How many more "troops" are needed? I would rather have stormtroopers with different poses if they are darned and determined to make more miniatures for me to buy.

It has always been a merchandising plot, why do you think they release new troops, ships, and aliens? All to release more toys. Give it time and Star Wars will once more reach the levels that Gundam has with Zaku IIs, there is one for any and every situation no matter how impractical it may be.

Besides, if FFG just released basic stormtroopers I feel like a number of imperial players might be upset at not getting anything 'new' whilst the Rebel and Scum factions get all their various toys.

Seems Rikalonius never heard of this: http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-13-most-ridiculous-types-of-stormtroopers-1686097129

Also its a natural progression in any created fiction setting that some elements are developed into other variants (usually the "red shirts"). If they have reason for existing and/or are well developed its another problem.

Edit = My point being that you shouldnt be sick of trooper variants (it makes sense in a setting like Star Wars). You should be sick of useless trooper variants (which in my view FFG didnt get to that point... yet).

Haha, I remember reading that article a few months ago.

Sure, some of those variants seem a little silly, but I think some make sense. The guy complains about Flametroopers, yet in real life we categorize much the same way. Flamethrowers are a kind of hard example since they're not really looked kindly upon in modern warfare, but we do often categorize troops by weapon, even if it's just a layperson thing. For instance, "sniper" has become a household word.

That's a fair criticism, and I can concede my point was not made clear enough. As a former infantry soldier I understand a bit about modern warfare. Obviously, to me anyway, that Snowtroopers are Stormtroopers in armor more suitable to extreme environments.. I think the Snowtroopers were a good addition. I think Heavy Stormtroopers were a good addition, as they mimic the machine gunner, and or the grenadier. Then you have the E-web engineer who mimics the heavy weapons component. We will soon have jet troopers which represent a scout type unit. And soon we are going to have, I believe, Scout Troopers, which will probably be snipers if I guess correctly. Then you ISB infiltrators that represent a Special Forces type unit. We also have elite versions of each. In the the setting of Imperial assault, what other troopers are you going to have. Aquatic troopers are not going to feature in IA. Let's say you add death troopers, who I hate for a number of reasons. Are those just going to be more better-er Stormtroopers that we paint black? Will they just be 12 pt units instead of 9 point ones? To me, all that is doing to do is push Stormtroopers out of the game, and just to sell more blister packs or expansions. I understand that FFG want to continue milking the Star Wars cow, and that what I'm advocating against is probably inevitable, but I won't like it. Eventually the cost creep is just going to ruin the game and its going to make ridiculous variants on top of it. I agree, that, we are not there yet. I already have to deal with teh fact that key characters like Han, Chewie, Kir Kanos (you heard me :P ) and Darth Vader cost to much, I don't want to start seeing key units, that represent the franchise, being pushed out for clichéd variants. I wouldn't mind a better Stormtrooper officer, however.

That's fair. As I understand, though (I don't personally play competitively) Stormtroopers are actually extremely popular still. If we did get Deathtroopers or some other variant, I'm sure people would find a use for them- but in the end, I don't think Stormtroopers are going anywhere.

I would like them to try to think more outside of the box, though. Heavy troopers were okay since regular Stormies had pretty small guns, but we're gonna start needing to see more drastic stuff in the future. Personally, I think that we need more things like vehicles and turrets for the Empire- so far all we have are AT-ATs and a tank. Most of all, I'd like to see a skiff type of unit (though that might be more of a mercenary thing) that could allow for holding and "carrying" of up to four troopers on its own activation, ignoring difficult terrain. That, in my opinion, would be pretty unique and still fit well with the lore- and would be pretty useful if we start seeing watery Scariff tiles in the future.

Thus is my fear. I would rather FFG made a ground combat game, then take IA to the point where Stormtroopers no longer have any role because the power creep leaves them behind. All of what your are describing more properly belongs in a bigger game, in my opinion. Which I would love to see. I've advocated for a more strategic ground based system, like what Armada is to X-Wing, with AT-AT and various vehicles and speeders, and where units of Rebel troopers and Stormtroopers are represented by a single miniature.

So kind of like a Rune Star Wars Miniatures game? :-)

Again, Stormies are still very much front and center. They're not going anywhere. They're economical and efficient. Hardly the most hard hitting force in the game, but you get your bang for your threat with them.

As for vehicles- well, I'd point out that 2/3 of the vehicles that we currently have were included in the core game box (though only minis for one). Clearly they've always been intended to be in this game. I'm not talking AT-ATs obviously, but maybe a speeder or a bike, or maybe some turrets or such.

I'd be down for an Armada-based ground game, though I'm not sure there's that big of a need. For the most part, the Rebels typically don't have a huge ground presence, and with AT-STs already in IA, one of the next biggest things we can't get are AT-ATs (unless you want to really pull from other sources, like World Devastators). Also, not really sure how a miniature game with units represented by a single figure would work well, particularly with LOS. Side note- have you played Rebellion? It's great, and might scratch that AT-AT itch.

In the end, though, I think it's a sort of live and let live kind of thing. You want a vanilla experience, more power to ya- vanilla is a delicious flavor. Someone wants a rainbow sprinkles cotton candy experience, with Flametroopers and T-4 tanks? They're not taking your stormtroopers from you, what's the damage?

Surge Surge: Flick hard to knock over your opponent's character, no matter how many hours he spent painting it.

when you gain movement points, make sure when counting spaces over figures to press down on the nicely painted figure with the base of the figure you are moving.
