Conditions Application

By Versch, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

Do all Conditions require damage to be scored to be able to apply?

Stun- I'm sure of, yes.

Bleed- I'm sure of, yes.

Weaken- Not sure.

Hidden- Not sure.

Focus- Not sure.

How about Surge abilities that have two Conditions tied to it like :Stun, Hide?

Recover isn't a Condition, and for some reason I feel damage does not need to be applied to benefit from this but since I'm in the ballpark... Am I off on this?

Blast, Cleave and all condition keyword require that the target of the attack suffered damage during step 7 of the attack to grant the corresponding condition. There is no difference between beneficial and harmful conditions in that. (The difference is to which figure the condition is applied to.)

If there are two Condition keywords, they both trigger when you spend the surge. One or both will give the corresponding condition after the attack resolves depending on whether the figure gaining the condition is still on the map or defeated. (The attacker can be defeated during the attack too from other abilities like Parting Shot.)

All other surge abilities are resolved regardless of the damage suffered unless the ability text says otherwise.

Also note that miss is not equal to not suffering damage. Miss is caused by a dodge rolled or insufficient accuracy. Not suffering damage can also happen if there are more (unpierced) blocks than damage results.

See https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1631857/ability-resolution-order-during-attacks for a few more reminders.

All surge abilities can always be triggered during the attack (including Blast, Cleave and Condition keywords) even if they end up doing nothing. But Blast, Cleave and Condition Keywords, and only Blast, Cleave and Condition Keywords (Focus, Hide, Stun, Bleed, Weaken) require that the target suffered damage from the step 7 of the attack to be performed after the attack resolves.

Also note the difference between the Condition Keywords (Focus, Hide, Stun, Bleed, Weaken) and the conditions themselves (Focused, Hidden, Stunned, Bleeding, Weakened). If a surge ability gives the condition itself (like "become Hidden" or "Choose an adjacent friendly Trooper, that figure becomes focused."), it does not require that the target suffered damage from the attack.

Also, Pierce does not remove symbols or accuracy, so it does not happen during step 4. Pierce is taken into account in step 7. Calculate Damage. (A ruling exists for the Heavy Armor command card confirming the wording on the Rules Reference Guide.)

One more: Recover damage is performed after the attack resolves, but a hero's "surge: recover strain" ability recovers the strain immediately during the spend surges step. (Notice the difference between Recover and recover. One is a keyword, the other isn't.)

Nice linky, ty mang!

Albert,

Can you give me an in-game example of why you elaborated this:

" Also note that miss is not equal to not suffering damage. Miss is caused by a dodge rolled or insufficient accuracy. Not suffering damage can also happen if there are more (unpierced) blocks than damage results."

I know there is a reason (Unit, Command card, Upgrade...Han Solo?), I just want to know how recognize it when it comes up.

Wait...is it Han Solo?...or other Units/Command Cards that trigger on a Miss?

There are a couple of cards like the agenda card No Disintegrations that use "if this attack did not miss", which is a more lenient condition for the attacker than "if the target suffered damage", but a more stringent condition than "if the target did not suffer damage". For the first you still need to roll the required accuracy and the defender should not dodge, while the last one does not require either of these.

Han Solo's Return Fire triggers when he did not suffer damage from an attack, which can be due to him blocking the damage or the attack missing (due to dodge or insufficient accuracy or some other ability).
