i like the discussion that went on here, I will post another for a different card and kick it off tomorrow and see if we can continue sharing ideas and strategy
Jyn Odan, one in a million. Discussion
Two of my training partners, Tim and Seb, are two of the best players around. We usually go to tournaments together, so we take our local meta to a lot of tournaments. And we don't care about a 5 hours journey for a regional.
German nationals 2015 I made it to the cut, just to loose to the later world champion. I've won two regionals, one with 4x4 in 2015, one with Stormtroopers in 2016, I've won a Store Championship, and I've won each GNK at least once (mostly with Stormtroopers). Most of the games I lost were against Tim or Seb.
And there are about two hands full of absolute top players spread all over germany.
I love Stormtroopers (the rest varies a lot). Tim plays them a lot, too. Seb plays a lot of different lists. E.g., 2016 he made it to german national finals with his Bantha.
German nationals were Stormtrooper lists, Bantha lists, and some Wookie lists. One of the Wookie players had an absolute anti-Bantha list, and became Champion with it. He had 8 activations (1 more than any Bantha), 2 Wookies (for their health), 2 eSabs (for their Stun).
I'd say, we have a highly competetive local meta ...
Honestly, I don't envy you. I'd like to have a few more consistent players, but I love that I can take a sub-par list with Jyn and play for fun more than anything else. I like to get competitive sometimes, but for most gaming areas, once you start going ultra competitive, you can never go back. I'd rather have a more casual weekday gaming experience and then if I really need the ultra-competitive atmosphere, I can pay for it by traveling to a regional or something.
I would note that traveling 5 hours in Germany or most of Europe for that matter is a bit different than traveling in the U.S. from my experience. I don like that we have a mixture of ultra-competitve and casual IA'ers here on the forums though. It's always nice to know you have resources to improve your game, but the nice part is that for the most part, I have not yet had posters shove their opinions down my throat like on other forums where Competition is the only game that is played.
One of the best things about Imperial Assault: High Competition and good, fun gaming experience do NOT contradict each other. This is not Warhammer 40K or Warmachine; players usually do not misbehave at the table.
You can have Star Wars, a challenging game and a gentle beer-and-bretzel-atmosphere at the same time.

I totally agree, and I love to compete in certain situations.
I've found in Xwing especially and for sure in other games you've mentioned, that it is difficult without some forethought or planning ahead to get everyone on the same page as far as how competitive each player is during casual game night. I feel like I can always amp up my competitiveness and only select ultra efficient cards, but I'm glad I can still bring 5 wampas and enjoy some silliness sometimes as well.
Good Post!
Thread Resurrection!
I am thinking about replacing MHD-19 with Jyn Odan. I have MHD in there to heal Luke and to use Devotion on him, and of course Miracle Worker. In my last few games though, he usually winds up hanging out with Leia and healing her (twice with Single Purpose, mondo aggravating for opponents).
Would people recommend replacing the good doctor with Jyn? Or even something else?

What's the rest of the list? If there are a lot of Smugglers then Jyn could take advantage of command cards already in the deck.
yeah, definitely need some more context. In a vacuum, I'd say no, but I'd love to take Jyn out for a whirl with some of these new Smuggler cards (Jyn and Tools for the Job or On the Lam)
I think the further away we get from the Core box though, the harder it is to keep some of those 3-5 health character figures alive.
I intend to try Jyn out tonight in a Smuggler/Spy list alongside Leia, Lando, eSabs and Gideon, plus some others I think, possibly davith. As far as command cards go, is there a decision on her command card? I can see the use of One in a Million with her and Leia but then she has to be awfully close...

If focused, she can fire pretty accurately from 5-6 away, but if just her plain shot, yeah, she can whiff. I kind of wish they would add some health or give her some of the elite Allied Smuggler traits, but then maybe she'd be too good. She's very dice dependent. Cunning is so good when you're rolling well, but the other third-half of the die will get you killed.
Jyn is much more viable now that there are more Smuggler command cards released with Jabba's Realm and the latest A&V wave. However I still don't like her survivability for her point cost. Several of the maps have corridors that are only 2 spaces wide - it's hard to position Jyn within line-of-sight of enemies without exposing her to gunfire. And at 6 health, the odds of her surviving more than one attack are pretty low.
I don't know if dropping her down to cost 4 is a solution. In my skirmish overcost document, I left her cost at 5 and made the following modifications:
Increase Health to 7
Smuggler's Luck: While defending, if you roll a blank result, add +1 BLOCK to the defense results.
As far as One in a Million is concerned -- there are now 2-point command cards that would help Jyn just as much as any other Smuggler on your list (Tools for the Job, Run for Cover). One in a Million should be errata'd to cost 1.
I think she's fantastic, one of my favorite deployment cards. That being said, having her live longer than a turn "in range" is a problem. 7 health is not too much to ask or a cost of 4. Because the numbers are so close, I wouldn't complain about it much. With 6 health, especially against the newer cards (they hit harder and do more damage) she can easily die to one shot. It's too easy to roll a blank I guess or just the block and then you die.
I personally like to get her focused before she goes "in range" because I have had too many occasions where I roll 2 "1" on the accuracy 3 spaces away and you don't always get a surge due the dice faces or evade or whatever. 3 green dice give you better odds for extra surges and extra damage and extra accuracy, all of which make you just annoying enough to be shot at so you can move away with nimble. But you want her Hair Trigger to be able to hit as well, so you still want to keep her kind of close.
One in a Million you really need to use when she is in range 2-3 on my dice. But she's always fun to play.
Focusing her (like any unit) will definitely make her more potent at damage and range. I agree the characters with bigger dice pools can effectively kill her but thats where positioning matters most. I feel she fits her role quite nicely and as you pointed out you want to keep her kind of close BUT only when its going to befit you and minimize the risks. Keeping her in range on a figure she cant kill on hair trigger is only viable if that figure cant 1 shot her on a blank etc.
she rolls two green dice already, you don't get a third one if you are focused (from the component limitations rule).
but, more on topic: an elite smuggler does the objective grabbing a bit better and easier... and for combat stats she needs to get really close to be in the fight, where she generally gets gunned down.

I'm never limited by components
I think that only works for campaign, besides, what's to keep me from rolling two dice and then rolling my one green die again for three?

huh, apparently there is an exception for dice too, thought the only exceptions where deployment cards and tokens.
edit: See page 8 of the rulebook for component limitations.
Edited by thecolourredThe limited dice case is mentioned in the RRG. You can take one of the blue or yellow and put it to a face corresponding to one of the rolled green die, then reroll that green die. If no face corresponds to the green face rolled, you can just take note of the accuracy and show the damage/surge face of the die. It is allowed by the rules. The component limitations are for deployment, supply and equipment cards in campaign and recon tokens for Loku.
New player here.
I attended my first tournament a few nights ago and I used a Rebel Trooper/Smuggler list. Jyn was pretty close to being the MVP. By chance I was able to get off a shot with 'Hair Trigger' whilst 'One in a Million' was in my hand, and whilst Focused. It was amazing!
I'm revising that particular list in preparation of my first Regionals event taking place next month. By then I'll have Jabba's Realm and a few other Smuggler-related hero/villain packs at my disposal. At first glance, the following Command Cards will be useful on Jyn (or any other Smuggler for that matter):

Has anyone else used a Smuggler-heavy list to good effect (Jyn included)? How did you go? What did you use?
