If this forum shocked him I pray to Cthulhu he never finds his way to pol.
Need to be stopped asap
asap = smoke in malay
why do you want to stop smoke.
I can't wait to field my new Twin Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation Turret.
I question why people were so offended by his OP.
Because demanding that a community make drastic changes to suit a single person is inherently rude. Doesn't matter how well it's worded it's a rude thing to ask. Then the OP itself was far from well worded he was rude and insulting from the start, so naturally people responded in kind.
This wasn't a friendly request it was a rude, condescending and unreasonable demand.
Would you have been so harsh if you were having a face to face with a new player over a game?
If they behaved the way he did yes, and that person would deserve to be treated that way.

TBH, no one should find their way to /pol/

It wasn't a drastic change, it was a request to not use acronyms as much.
It was not to suit a single person, it was to benefit newbies to the game and community.
It was not rude, or condescending, unless you are overly sensitive to any criticism of your behavior. Perhaps a bit rough around the edges, sure. Didn't reach anywhere near the point of literally being told to **** off by a community member, and not getting much better from others in the thread.
It wasn't a drastic change, it was a request to not use acronyms as much.
That's a fairly drastic change considering how many upgrades and other cards we talk about here.
It was not to suit a single person
Yes it actually was, because he was the only one asking for it.
It was not rude, or condescending
To you maybe, but it was clearly both to a lot of other people here. Or are you going to tell everyone else they were wrong? I mean do you believe you get to decide what everyone else thinks?
And asking a community to change how it behaves for the sake of someone who won't bother to learn how things work is again inherently rude and condescending. He even said the whole point is he didn't want to bother to read and learn the jargon used here. How is that anything but condescending?
Well, in either case it's not happening.
Bloody LEMs want everything handed to them on a plate. If initialisms were good enough for Archimedes then they're good enough for us, QED.
acronyms are always going to be a thing in any game, event, or even household.
Theyre only a problem when people start using acronyms for random crap. In a thread talking about Wave9 stuff you see BMST start popping up. Either you A) didnt read the spoilers about wave9 or B) cannot make the connection on what that is for some reason or C) look at whats in Wave9 and see theres only 1 card that fits that acronym, thus bam black market slicer tools
acronyms are always going to be a thing in any game, event, or even household.
I think that's my biggest problem with the OP... Every community be it hobby, job, family, ect... Has jargon and it really is up to someone wanting to join that community to learn it.
If we treated people poorly for asking what PtL or VI meant, then maybe there would be a point. Or if there wasn't a link to all the jargon used that was a sticky so it was easy to find... Then there would again be a point.
But in this case, none of that is true, what we have is a single person who doesn't want to bother learning the jargon and asking everyone else to change "for the sake of the newbies" which really is BS and everyone knows it. Unless you are completely new to gaming, you know the first thing you'll want to do is learn the jargon.
To you maybe, but it was clearly both to a lot of other people here. Or are you going to tell everyone else they were wrong? I mean do you believe you get to decide what everyone else thinks?
When people are blatantly wrong, I will tell them so; IDGAF how many.
The fact that other members of the community were liking his original post, and posted similarly, such as #4 who ignores overly initialized posts, and another who states he hates when people do it with squad names and similar show that it was not "everyone."
It was a select few members of this forum that acted out poorly and overly aggressive to what was a request to help newbies. I don't think it was a workable idea, but I could respect where he was coming from.
And asking a community to change how it behaves for the sake of someone who won't bother to learn how things work is again inherently rude and condescending. He even said the whole point is he didn't want to bother to read and learn the jargon used here. How is that anything but condescending?
Asking a community to change to help newbies is not inherently rude and condescending unless the members of that community are so overly sensitive that any recommendation of change is viewed as inherently rude.

Oh yeah, like I said while ago, it was a misguided idea and dead in the water.
Just didn't require the visceral response it got from some members of the community.

Your reaction is so overblown. It's a very simple request. It's also helpful to new players and forum goers. I've been here for 6 months and I still am forced to pull out my phone and use the X-Wing Squadron Builder app twenty times a day because I simply don't know what people here are talking about off the top of my head, and I'm positive I'm not the only one.
This thread topic is pretty frequent. It's not just one person. Many people don't know what U-Boats, SL, AT, EM, or the other hundreds of pilot, upgrade, and squad acronyms and abbreviations are off the top of their heads.
I've said it before (in other threads and this one), at least spell out the acronyms the first time you use them. It's courteous, and proper.
When people are blatantly wrong, I will tell them so; IDGAF how many.
Well in that case, since you think you get to decide what other people should think or say... I know what to do next.
It's a very simple request.
No it really isn't, the fact that you don't get it doesn't change anything. Asking everyone else to change because someone doesn't want to bother taking the time to educate themselves is a huge deal.
It's also helpful to new players and forum goers.
And if anyone has a question about what a given bit of jargon means they can ask and be educated. Which is something the OP refused to do, rather he wants everyone else to change their behavior to suit him.
Edit: That all said the Foxtrot Oscar comment was uncalled for. But there were already 8 or so other posts which were not rude at all pointing out the issue with the OP before that.

I've re-read the op several times and my take on it was that it wasn't a demand. I saw this as a politely worded suggestion. One of the problems I see new players having, besides the shorthand, is the lack of consistency in posts. One I read this morning, referring to Manaroo, included Manny, Roo, Manaroo and Dengaroo. For a noob this would be confusing. I doubt that all 3 references would be in a glossary.
We basically have 4 groups of players on these forums. Tournament and Casual. Casual being broken down into "veteran" and noob. When a player posts something that you consider to be "inherently rude" stop and think for a minute if this him being rude or just being new. Give him the benefit of doubt. It doesn't cost you anything and it may add a good player to the tournament worthy ranks.
Too many times I've seen responses to a build inquiry that simply states, "it'll die to Palpaces". No explanation, just a flat out pronouncement. A new player may and often is intimidated and won't ask for an explanation.
That's just my take. I've had several "warm" discussions over card interpretations and I can honestly say only one respondent was really rude. I try and give the benefit of doubt until all doubt has been removed.
Or as a very wise man once said, "Do to others as you would have them do to you."
There's the rub: Many of us want more snark. More banter. More laughing at our own expense (which is digital, contextual, and MOSTLY harmless).
I love when prople rip into me online. I especially love NASTY comments I get on my Youtube (shameless plug: Leewardstyle Youtube ), and I answer every NASTY comment with "Thanks for the comment." Gotta give aloha to even know what getting aloha looks like.

"4 groups of of players..."
Lists three. Heh.
And initialism are fine. They are present in everyday life, and in every field. Additionally, in every hobby.
Self-education is NOT difficult, nor is asking for clarification. Keeping silent and ignoring them is also an acceptable personal choice.
Recommending otherwise to a community that is doing perfectly well WITH them is silly. An individual's ignorance should be their responsibility alleviate, in whichever manner they feel most comfortable.
Personally, when I was getting started, I would just google, "X-Wing [specific Initialism]," if it wasn't something that context would eventually provide.

I already said I'm on a cell phone, even right now when I type, it's just so much easier to type pwt instead of primary weapon turret, and then have to delete a stupid autocorrect, or typo, which I've already done now twice typing this, 3 now lol.
It's really not much of a bother to ask. Everyone who frequent here has been new at some point, and we all seem to be doing fine learning the XWing slang on here. I've had to ask before what pwt ment because I was seeing it used a lot, but didn't know what it ment. I asked. I've seen something recently and wasn't sure, and been meaning to ask. I don't make a post asking for everyone to suit my needs. Every game community has its own jargon. I was on nioh for ps4 message boards and came across jargon I didn't understand. I didn't ask everyone there to change their ways to suit me.
If someone asks I've got no problem helping them out, but don't expect me to change something I've become use to and something that makes it easier on me because one is kind of lazy. I'm not trying to be mean, but I hate tying on this keyboard at times, but so it anyway.
Oh and to the guy who basically told the op to f.o, not cool man. Perhaps it is people like that who should leave the community. Agree or disagree, that was pretty low.
As the saying goes, "It's easier to ask a dumb question then to fix a dumb mistake".

Sorry about the math error. Pass it off to a low hemoglobin count.
You're right about initialisms, they are a fact of modern life. The point I was trying to make was the responses to the original post were a little harsh. Where some saw it as rude and demanding, I saw it as a polite, reasonable request. Misguided but polite. Put yourself in a noobs position. Here's a guy that logs in as a guest, sees the responses to the original post, especially the Foxtrot Oscar one, and thinks "Holy Crap on a Cracker these guys are brutal. There's no way I want any part of this". And then he's gone.
Think of it another way. The old expression, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression", pretty much covers the situation. I'm not defending the OP or attacking the other posters, I'm merely pointing out if someone posts what you perceive as a rude, demanding or stupid post, think before you respond in kind. He could be a very raw recruit.
Well, in either case it's not happening.
Bloody LEMs want everything handed to them on a plate. If initialisms were good enough for Archimedes then they're good enough for us, QED.
