Freefall Encounter

By verdantsf, in Game Masters

I gave my players a bit of a scare today :D . An ally's ship was blown apart by 3 competing bounty hunting factions, sending them all into freefall. Here's a clip of the encounter, as well as the rules I put together for them to avoid the consequences of an extreme fall:
Several bounty hunters are also falling toward the surface. Some are unconscious, some are simply disoriented.
Everyone needs to make a Daunting Fear check. On a Failure, add a Setback to all checks for the duration of this encounter.
This is an Extreme Fall and may result in death unless you can do one of the following:
Get hold of a jetpack from a nearby bounty hunter.
  • Average 2D 1S Coordination or Athletics check if the bounty hunter is unconscious or dead
  • Hard 2C 1D 1S Coordination or Athletics check if the bounty hunter is conscious
  • Then make a successful Average 2D 2S Piloting (Planetary) check. The check is upgraded once and has 2 additional Setbacks if the PC attempts to also save the bounty hunter.

Perform a successful Coordination check with Move right before hitting the ground. This has to be timed correctly or it will be no use, thus only 1 attempt is allowed. This is inspired by the Free Fall Force Push Maneuver successfully performed by Kanan in Rebels.

  • Daunting 4D 1S Coordination if attempted on yourself
  • Average Coordination 2D 1S if attempted on others
  • If attempting this with the intention of using Move on yourself and others at the same time, the difficulty is upgraded once.
The next one was kept hidden so that the player with high Survival didn't realize there was hope for him at first ;) .
Perform a successful Hard 2C 1D 2B Survival check to ride Shorin’s Blood Eagle. Shorin has been knocked unconscious by a bounty hunter, but the saddle has room for another person behind him. A second PC can be carried in the Blood Eagle’s talons with another Hard 2C 1D 2B Survival check, but even two people is very taxing and the Blood Eagle will be forced to land after one attempt at this.

Great idea. I love it.

Not sure on the force move mechanic, technical levitating too early is no problem, you just need to maintain move for a few round in that case until you land on the ground.

Not sure either on the blood eagle. I don't see the reason to upgrade the check, blood eggles are natural flyers and shorin's one is obvious trained for riding.

They are not bad for riding, Sil 3, Speed 2, Handling -1.

At speed 2 it would be just average 2C 1S pilot check. Speed 1 might be not fast enough to catch other characters in free fall, but it certainly should reduce the pool to: average 1c 1d 1s.

Oh, that was more for a challenge. We're at 1K+ xp for many in the group (some over 2K), so I often bump checks up. However, I kept things on the lower end for most of the other checks, since the consequences were so dire.

Free falling debris with the blood eagle right in the middle of it.

Would as well explain why the creature does not just fly away on its own.

Just in case I am gonna steal you idea. Which I am totally gonna do. :)
