So we have the scene where Kylo Ren is talking to the helmet of Darth Vader. We see that it has been seriously deformed by the funeral pyre that Luke placed Vader on. Deformed to the point that it looks like the helm is actually melted to the mask. Now consider that Vader's suit was able to stand the rigors of space based on his ability to fly his TIE Advanced with no additional life support. That makes it really good at insulating Vader's body from the temperature extremes, both heat and cold.

Considering all this, it's highly possible that Vader's body didn't reach a great enough temperature to be fully cremated. Considering the deformity of the helmet, that would mean that Kylo Ren is keeping the decapitated head of his grandfather on his Star Destroyer.

Maybe, but Ben Solo is an ex-Jedi Knight of Ren, not sith. And who knows anything when it comes to the rules of force ghosts and when/to whom they can appear.

But then he sold the franchise, and new references like Star Wars In 100 Scenes came out, that mentioned Vader's corpse disappearing leaving only the armour behind.

That or Obi-wan and Yoda just keep nagging him about prequel stuff like quoting his bit about sand or his "hey spinning is a good trick." so he decided to do nothing when Kylo went all dark side crazy.

And yea the whole Leia and Han naming Kylo after Ben is just so odd, I mean he is someone that Leia never even met and Han really only knew him on the trip from Tatooine to the Alderaan asteroid field.

I haven't ever really gotten into the novels either Legends or DisCan. I just figured that Anakin, being the Chosen One, pulled a Qui-Gon and force ghosted himself without having his body disappear. That might also explain why his ghost was never a major player in the later parts of the story as he didn't have the same training as Obi-Wan and Yoda did. Also, kinda seems silly for Luke to build a funeral pyre for an empty suit of armor. That would imply he was honoring Darth Vader as that was all that was left instead of the remains of his father.

Perhaps more oddly, the helmet is deformed by a campfire, but other parts of the armor are shown to resist freaking lightsaber slashes. I feel like the actual effect of burning the armor should be sooty armor that looks exactly like the original stuff, otherwise.

Well, we never saw to what extent the armor was damaged by the glancing strike in TESP. In ROTJ Luke's blade slices Vader's hand off with no visible resistance, so perhaps prolonged contact with fire (the hottest wood fires are right around the melting point of steel) is enough to deform the armor but not melt it.

I think JJ said that something in the Force is blocking Obi, Yoda, and Anakin from just appearing willy nilly. That's why they were so faint in talking to Rey in her vision.

Myer personal theory is that the Force in a given location determines how strong a force ghost can be there. Look at how Ben appears on Hoth as compared to Dagobah (a planet known to be strong in the Force).

But in any case something was blocking them for the convenience of the story.

Hey, it's pretty much thanks to Ben he met his wife. In a way Obi is the closest thing Han had to a father in law Might aswell name your kid after him.

I'd say the interaction between Vader and Han on Bespin is par for course for what a father would do to the guy who just happened to be alone with his daughter for a prolonged period of time.

That's a fair point and a reasonable explanation why Obi-Wan only appears in some places and a ghostly voice in others (and, it seems, was corroborated by the Clone Wars). In fairness, Force ghosts turning up all over the place would be rather annoying.

Especially if only trained force users can see them. Can you imagine the looks Luke would get if he was having conversations with beings that quite possibly couldn't be seen by anybody else in the galaxy?
