As X-Wing wanes, whats next to play?

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing

Guild Ball is gaining some following here in the SF Bay.

The miniatures come unpainted, so it's not a game that will ever get me, though.

There is even a starter set with 2 teams, all the tokens you need and a double sided gamingboard coming out for 69,99$.

I think i will start with Guildball then, i really liked Bloodbwol and Dreadball.

I just picked up Guild Ball this past Sunday with two Xwing friends. It is super fun. I am kicking myself for not knowing the starter was coming, as I went Masons, while the other two went Morticians and Fishermen. I basically spent 100 dollars to get the full team and tokens and no board and no Brewers.

It is not an Xwing replacement for me. But more of a side hobby to my main hobby.

When people say "blood bowl" do they mean the old school one that has been out of print for years or is there something newer out? I know there was going to be a reboot but it doesn't look like that happened yet

The old one the new one is not out yet, probably end of this year or the beginning of the next year.

X-wing is the only minis game I have ever played. If it vanished, I would probably start playing video games again or doing more rpgs.

Seriously, does anyone expect Games Workshop to do anything but completely hose up their "new" Specialist Games? They've spent the better part of fifteen years disavowing the games that are their best work, or pulling stunts like the "rerelease" of Space Hulk as a "Limited Edition Game".

I want to support it, but frankly I predict their price point on BB being close to $150 USD and the teams going for $70 apiece; they do mention the starter price point being kept 'deliberately light' so it would be a pleasant surprise if it were sub-$100.

My main problem will be that I want to support my FLGS, and GW has some... rather awful... policies regarding game stores they do not own.

Im expecting them to fully drop the ball, but there is nothing stopping me from going back to my old pitch, teams, and rules. I will continue to play Blood Bowl for the rest of my life more than likely. Its the best thing GW ever produced.

Advanced Squad Leader is still going strong after all these years. Still my #1 and enteral fall back game.

I hope to play through ASL starter kit one some day.

I'll play whatever Star Wars game is next, and hope it's cheaper than this one but nearly as fun to play.

Probably impossible, but I'd love a game that combines the complexity and fun of this one with the price, speed of gameplay, and collectability of Pocketmodel (please tell me I'm not the only person who ever played that one...)

And I will never spend a dime in a store they own. The GW stuff at the `other` stores in my area is about half the price for the same models.

It already has started to wane for me so ive been getting into other games and enjoying them more like

Armada

Imperial Assault

9th Age

Zombicide, Black Plague

TANKs to a small degree

My gaming fun is not affected by the lame herd's mood.

I agree. Of course I do not just focus on one game and play it until I burn out. Variety is the spice of life. Long after FFG stops making x-wing, I will still be playing games from time to time.

Robotech (if I ever build the minis / they ever actually release wave 2)

Sigh.... Yeah.

I would very much like to work up rules and cards to use the flight path system with the robotech minis. Palladium's rules don't necessarily look "bad" (haven't actually played) but they do look singularly uninspired, like a mediocre game designer was just phoning it in.

I've been working up some modified rules that are closer to Infinity because they feel far more cinematic.

Well, hopefully x wing stays around for a good long while. It fills this cool niche between board games and miniature games for me, and I'd hate to see it go. That said, I am REALLY looking forward to the new runwars miniature game FFG is developing. Im hoping it gets a decent group in my area so I can add it to my hobby.

Armada easily

already there to fill Star Wars in space niche

I would take Star Trek models and find some way to put them on top of Armada stands and give the armada cards.

Blood bowls carried on fine without GW you can buy teams from a number of sites as well as 3D pitches and the like.

Frankly I don't see GW's revised edition being less than £100 and they'll probably to to force AoS into it even though it's a Separate universe.

I'd try and build my own Irish Revolution game.

Imagine a world where x -wing kind of declines slowly and you thirst for more.

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

I'd play Tanks!, or maybe Middle Earth: The Wizards. Got a bunch of board games gathering dust: Fortress America (the original, though I saw FFG rereleased it), Risk 2150, Axis & Allies, Shogun, Settlers of Catan (though annoyingly all the cardboard tiles for the island were cut offset by 1/4").

So many options.

So far I have introduced Catan to 5 families and all have bought their own copies within 2 weeks of playing thier first game. Its such an easy and yet fun system.

But I will never stop playing X-Wing. There are so many ways to play, so many scenarios that you can make up.

X-wing never dies!!!!! We also do have SW campaing in GURPS going, it is best system to run SW roleplay game!

The original Axis & Allies, Fortess America and Shogun games were great.

Don't forget Conquest of the Empire and Broadsides.

I've been eyeing other skirmish games for a while (X-Wing being my first miniatures game ever), because I absolutely hate the times when you set everything up perfectly with 4 red dice, target lock and focus, just to squeeze out one hit. Or those 5 blank greens.

Had my eye on Infinity until I found out the dice will screw you even harder.

Now I'm looking at Malifaux because it's diceless. Looking for an intro game one of these days.

I could also just paint smiley faces on my Go pellets...

How will dice in Infinity screw you harder? You have a value you must roll equal or lower and that is it, there is no critical failure, of course depending on your stat the probability to hit can be lower than the probability to score a hit with the X-Wing die, so all in all i don't see a big difference. Of course in ARo you sucess can be canceled if the opponents rolls higher sucesses or a crit.

And in Malifaux instead of rolling dice you flip playing cards to get your die results so you can fail too.

You have a decent collection and you will still play the game of course. But its not enough anymore.you are ready for... something else.

FFG new Runewars looks like it will be just in time to fill some shoes.

Maybe try something else that's popular now?

Resurrect an ancient game system from the book shelf and play that again?

Print out Star Citizen ships and speed 4 banks, design a few pilot cards based on your fellow squad mates, keep enjoying the dog fights on the table. ^_^

Why fly something old when it is so easy to fly something new?

I don't play it myself, but aren't most dice rolls in Infinity single dice rolls? In that you only roll one dice at a time? When you're only rolling one dice at a time you get more screwed by outlying results (or more accurately, the dice results will simply be more random). The more dice you roll at any given instance, the more 'average' your dice will be.
