So a noob wants to buy Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay...

By Orientalist, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hello all,

After two weeks of debating and fighting with myself I've decided to buy Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. This will be a major event for me because Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay will be my first pen & paper game. Yes, I never played pen & paper before, only board games [a long time Fantasy Flight acolyte] and card games. I admit I don't know much about the whole mechanics of the pen & paper games but I am very enthusiastic about this game and I am sure I will love to learn it bit by bit. So, my question: is Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay enough for me and my two friends to play it? Is the box containing anything we need? The thing is that now I do not want to invest in The Adventurer's Toolkit and others, only in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Box. In other words, I want to make sure this box will give us all the necessary bits and pieces.

For such a high price, it should! happy.gif

Thank you for your help!

P.S. And sorry for my language; alas, English is not my first language.

Don't worry, the box contains all the materials you need to play. It does assume you have access to a place to play, a few writing utensils and some imagination though, so you may need to get one or more of those before you get started ;-)

I know you dont want to buy the adventurer's toolkit, but if you've owned/played Descent before, you'll know how annoying having only one set of dice is.

When they come out, you might want to consider getting some... not saying its required as there is a good number in the box. It just helps speed the game up when there are more (I personally pre-ordered 4 sets, but that's just me)

It doesnt' contain everything you need to play: you also need a pencil and some players :)

Sooo..... where do I buy a pen and some players? Any ideas how much a player is nowadays?

Seriously now, thanks all of you!

I am going to order the box in a few minutes. To say I am excited it would be an understatement.

Did yours not come with a free player? My was attached to the box; his name is Edmund. A bit of a geek but what can you do, he was free.

I'd take yours back to where you got it from and see if your free player has fallen down the back of the shelf or something...

To echo the others: the box has most everything you need. Just add pencils, erasers, and your imaginations.

Since you are an avowed newcomer, I would offer this: in order to insure the smoothest and most fun experience, make sure you know the rules before your first session. There are a number of GM aids that will assist you in running the game, but they do require that you have a decent grasp of the rules.

That being said, don't be afraid to wing it if you forget something or can't find a rule quickly. The dice mechanic is perfect for allowing a GM to come up with modifiers on the fly; so make sure you understand the dice mechanic well, and everything else can flow from that.

Oh! And Welcome! happy.gif

Naw, to get the free player with the box, you have to buy it at the local game store. I've seen both blow-up versions and versions that blow up when there is a mis-called rule ;)

Welcome to the hobby mate. =)

Welcome!

As for English not being your first language, I wouldn't even have noticed if you hadn't put that little caveat in there.

I've been playing the Warhammer rpg in all its incarnations and really like what FFG has done with this current version. I'd be interested (as I'm sure others would) to hear how your first few sessions go, seeing as how you're an RPG virgin. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Well, I am free - as long as you can manage the airfare from Australia :)
