Counting Fire Lane dice

By itzSteve, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

When determining the number of dice for a ship in range of a Fire Lane token, if LoS is through another ship to the token, does that affect the dice total...ie. one less die for obstructed?

We've always played that as "Yes, Obstructions do count." - But there's no hard and fast, I've seen it argued both ways...

Mostly its the "As if performing an attack", which instructs you to pick up the dice, but discard one before rolling... ANd in the case of fire lines, you never quite get to the rolling....

You do not add anything but the initial battery, and Obstructions do effect the pool you pull from the battery, but does not effect the battery itself .

And the complete lack of any text involving Obstructions may indeed infer they are to be ignored.

As I said, the only guidance I can give is that we've always played it that it does effect it... And really, its only mattered one or two times, where all 3 tokens were stacked together and a fatass MC80 decided to park itself between the Tokens and the Approaching Star Destroyers.

But we didn't have to worry about LOS next turn, because the MC80 was dead.

TL;DR:

No specific rules statement, but I believe as you are to measure Attack Range AND Line of Sight , as per the objective, Obstacles count.

Yeah...that's kind of how I interpreted it as well. The phrase, "as if performing attacks with battery armament targeting that objective token" is why I ask....

"...players measure attack range and line of sight from each of their ships hull zones as if performing attacks with battery armaments targeting that objective token."

There is no arguing both ways. There is just the objective text.

BUT I AM JUST USING MY BATTERY ARMAMENT! SEE! FOUR RED DICE, IS FOUR RED! THE FACT THERE IS A SHIP IN THE WAY IS IRRELEVANT. SEE. JUST BATTERY ARMAMENT... NO MODIFIERS. GOOD OR BAD.

Yes, yes. I know, I know. It's this kind of 'logic' that generates 95% of the controversies around here.

At no time did I say it was a good argument.

Only that it could be made.

If I'm bored one day (even more than usual) I'll break apart EVERY card and effect in the game.

Konstantine:

At the start of each Status Phase, for each enemy ship at distance 1-5 of at least 2 friendly medium or large ships, you may increase or decrease that enemy's ship speed by 1 to a minimum of 1.

So if I have like 3 enemy ships at distance 1-5 of 2+ of my ships, I can totally change their speed by 1 PER SHIP, right?

MM:

When a friendly ship resolves the token effect, it can cancel 1 die at medium range or reroll 1 die at close range or distance 1.

This must be in ADDITION to the standard effect. And no, I don't read the FAQ.

Ackbar:

Before a friendly ship's Attack Step, it may choose to attack from only its left and right hull zones this round. If it does, it may add 2 red dice to its attack pool while attacking a ship.

Totally only works when you fire from left AND right. Yeah, done deal there.

You sound somewhat Resentful.

It's been a rough day.

Oh....this discussion went downhill fast...lol.

I take full responsibility.

I will apologize to Lord Vader personally.

Because I don't know if I want to play the Part of Lord Vader for that bit...

Of course, if you declare you're using Ackbar's ability and then you only attack from one of those hull zones, means that you cheated and you must forfeit the game immediately

You're right, if there are 3 enemy ships at distance 1-5 of at least 2 of your medium-large ships, you can modify their speed for up to 3. So if they have a CR90 at speed 4 you can make it go to 1 right away

This is why Mothma works perfectly at medium range as you are able to cancel one die and rerroll another. If you add Foresight is 2 cancels and 2 rerrolls with only one Evade at medium range. It's really good, isn't it?

%!*? It GK you totally made me reread Konstantine like 5 times. I was like "holy %*?! Maybe that IS what they meant!"

You're welcome :D

The English language is brilliant, you can alway interprate things at least two ways. That's why they pay lawyers so much to prepare legal documents....
