Punishment (for myself most likely)

By Bubbachop, in X-Wing Squad Lists

The list I'm thinking of using is:

3 PS2 Punishers with accuracy corrector and....

I do realise that is not a good start but I figured they're pretty beefy, reliable and cheap.

My question is, do I tool them for ordnance, bombs, both or should I add a fourth good ship like Omega Leader?

Thanks :-)

If you want tough, reliable Accuracy Corrector ships use the TIE/x1. Same base cost as the Punisher but doesn't have to pay for the Accuracy Corrector.

A few builds were thrown around when they were announced. AC/DC was four paired with Dark Curse, and another one was based on four packing Cluster Missiles. Guidance Chips has only made that more potent.

Thanks for the advice. Is there really no way of making the Punisher viable?

Punishers can definitely be viable. The named pilots are a ton of fun; Redline hits like a truck and Deathrain is just entirely too much fun. But if you're looking to use the generics, how about something like this?

Colonel Vessery (35)

- TIE/X7 (-2)

- Crack Shot (1)

Total 34

Black Eight Squadron Pilot (23) x2

- LRS (0)

- Homing Missiles (5)

- EM (2)

- Adv. Sensors (3)

Total 33

You've got 3 fairly durable ships that hit like a pile of bricks. LRS is Vessery's best friend and of course being an X7 defender he's pretty hard to hit. Advanced Sensors is awsome with LRS; not only can you use it to negate the drawback, you get all the usual benefits of being able to boost/do an action before pulling a red maneuver. I'd go Black Eights with this particular list purely for the Uboat matchup. You could drop EM from one of the Punishers if you want to put Juke and TIE Mk. II on Vessery instead.

eh.........

apart from Deathrain in a VERY specifically "nothing but low numbers of high value ships" meta (palpatine aces, ig-88s, 2-ship builds rebel regen etc.), i.e things you can absolutely murder with conner nets,

not really

problem with the punisher is it doesn't do enough different from the Tie Bomber whilst being morbidly overpriced for its improved statline.

So really, you're just flying a worse bomber (especially now that the PS 5 generics get elite pilot talents) unless you're rolling Deathrain who has an incredible and unique ability (but is still morbidly overpriced :P)

I ran a pretty successful build with Redline, Deathrain and 2 Academy Ties. Academies act as blockers and Redline typically can get off a salvo of missles to severely damage or destroy a ship in the first attack. I beat a Palp Shuttle list, Brobots, Ghost build and a few others. Triple defenders shut me down, because they were just too hard to kill.

I also ran Redline with a DoomShuttle and 3 academies that was fairly effective and got me in the top 6 of a store tournament. Tactical Jammer on the Shuttle made my opponents think twice about shooting Redline and the Ties did their part in blocking, harassing and distracting fire from the 2 heavies.

What kills the generic is that you load 3 up with ordinance and then you would be facing a Jumpmaster squad that likely takes out one ship a turn.

OR as Blue Five noted, you could get 4 Tie/X1s with accuracy corrector that are simply a lot harder to hit.

I haven't attempted a Cutlass or Black Eight list, because there are simply other options that are more survivable.
