Pilot Skill Value histograms - updated

By Managarmr, in X-Wing

Back in dec/jan we had discussions where people were of the opinion that 9 different PS values is too much, 3-5 would be enough. That got me intrigued then to plot the distributions.
Now with more waves released/resp. spoiled I updated the material. It contains up to wave 10. We know all PS values, but number of EPT carriers for latest wave probably is an underestimation. Caveat: as this is pure fun work, it might contain small errors.
You see the pilot values 0-12 at X axis, Y-axis shows number of pilots in each column. 0 is included as we have Torkil so every faction potentially having a 0 skill pilot, likewise can Roark make rebels 12, and Empire has Epsilon Ace. Adaptability and Veteran Instincts can shift all EPT carriers 1 step down or 1-2 steps up.

Upper right is all pilots. A very nicely shaped bell curve (a small dip at 4, this is S&V, see below), so mid-level is the most frequent.
If we look factionwise (observe that axis is 18 for all of them), then rebel is most equal, very similar frequencies at 3-8. (Back in the days they had a lot of 2/4/6/8, but now its more even.)
Empire has a more skewed distributions, a peak of 6, and slightly more 3&4 than rebels.
Scum and Villainy kept it overall lower levels (experienced pilots mostly 5-7, 8 almost absent), and it distinct dislike of the value 4.
Overall faction comparison is the lower right (corrected for uneven number of pilots in the factions, observe axis thus scales to fractions of 1)

Lets have a look at EPT carriers. Adaptability and Veteran Instincts can shift all EPT carriers 1 step down or 1-2 steps up. not reflected in the graphes.

Again, all clumped together upper right. Still more or less a bell curve, but shifted higher up, and right flank cut off (as more than 9 naturally not possible).
If we look factionwise (observe that axis is 11 for all of them), we see rebels having a more spread out distribution, while Empire has no EPTs lower than 4, and most of their experienced pilots are higher up, at 6-8). S&V has many 5 and 7.

Last out a faction split, I wanted to see what happens if you exclude Resistance and First Order, leaving only OT stuff.

How about the histogram showing their use as "number of ships at this PS used in tournament X squadrons."

I imagine THAT list would almost be the inverse with far more high PS and low PS ships being used than middling PS values. Such a list should contain far more data points but it's also subjective.

When you make this list I think you should just pull out the generics and use the uniques. Why? Because you can fly as many PS 1 Academy pilots in a list as you want but you can only fly so many PS 8 TIE Fighters even if given unlimited points.

I like the idea of a plot of winning ships:

We'd see big points at 1,3,4,7,8,9. A not unnoticeable point at 5 because Ryad, and also a small one at 2 due to the OGP.

But almost all rebels currently have a 5 as well... Go Go Biggles! I would actually expect it to be ranked as such:

8 > 9 > 3 > 5 > 2 > 1 > 4 > 6 > 7

Really, who uses PS7 these days? 8 is well represented by OL, Inq, Horn, Miranda, RAC and Poe. 9 is well represented by Fel and Dengar. 3 is for the U boats and Lothal Rebels, 5 is for Biggs, Kanan and Ryad, 2 is for Stresshog and Palpatine, 1 is for your AP filler, 4 is for Manaroo, and 6 & 7 aren't really used, but you do get some Vessery, thus why 6 > 7.

Keep in mind that when I say do a histogram based on use I also mean that if you were flying that six AP plus Howlrunner swarm you would be getting SIX PS 1 marks to go with a single PS 8 mark for Howlrunner. Maybe we don't have so many squadrons like that anymore but the multiple low PS ships you'll get in a swarm may make up for a higher frequency of Ace style lists that use higher PS but few ships.

Dash and Norra are both PS7. That's not exactly nothing.

Ps 7 is rare, though

Rare enough that I never build double ARC Biggs with initiative :P

Updated, up to C-Roc.

As we cannot see with Scyks have EPTs in that package, no EPT graphs.

That would be interesting, but quite tedious to compile the data.
