Mountaintop Rescue advice

By Rosco74, in Game Masters

Hello I am planning to run this scenario soon, with only one force sensitive player and one smuggler.

First, do you think it's an error to allow the smuggler to see the Guardian? it is written somewhere only force sensitive characters can see him. The problem is, I don't want my smuggler player feels outside the discussion, I would prefer him to participate the discussion etc.

Second, I need to tips and tricks to make the final duel epic. What did you use to make this fight epic?

I am planning a duel btw the force sensitive and Malefax, while the smuggler handle the advosec guards. One idea is Malefax using his power "Move" to make the roof fall on my player. The issue I can see is : if the power succeed, the roof falls, and how my player is supposed to interract with it? should I make the walls shake untill his turn and he gets to react?

Another thing, Malefax doesn't have the hurl upgrade of the "Move" power, he can't throw debris at my player, nor he can push the player into the fountain 5 meters below. Do you think giving him this upgrade would unbalance the fight?

And finally what other idea did you come out with the temple to create a great duel? and what options for the smuggler vs the Advosec except cover behind pillars?

Thanks a lot !!

Since the Guardian is a projection from the holocron, I would have no problem if the Guardian chose to allow himself to be seen by non-Force users.

I will warn you that move can become very quickly overpowering, and you can easily kill characters by moving large objects onto them or by causing them to be pushed off a cliff or something.

Beyond that, I’m not sure I’ve got any specific advice for you.

Thanks.

About the holocron.. is it standard rule that a holocron can project himself hundreds meters away? I can't remember but I think the holocron is installed in a secret chamber, and it is linked with a technological device that extend his influence and allow him to project his hologram anywhere in the valley... no more explanation hehe. So I think I could use that technological device to explain why anyone can see him...

Another thing, I think I will add Adversary 1 to Malefax, as I have been told he is a bit weak...

The Guardian/Caretaker in Mountaintop Rescue is a special case in how far he can project his image; as long as its within the grounds of the old temple, he can show up pretty much as he pleases.

No explanation is given in the adventure for how he does it, whether it be a series of microprojectors that have been installed at various points or if it's some kind of "minor Force vergence type of thing. I left it unanswered for my group when I ran them through the adventure, and half of them decided it was some form of technological trickery and the other simply an aspect of the area being so infused with the energies of the Force.

Well, a holocron is something of a technological device anyway, despite the fact that it is also imbued with mystical energy from the Force.

So, I think you could run it anyway you want, or not try to define it at all and just leave it up to the interpretation of the players.

I didn’t run Mountaintop Rescue itself, as that had already been run by the previous GM and I wasn’t present for that game. But I did run the follow-on adventure, which used the same setting with the same Guardian.

And when I ran that adventure, I didn’t bother to try to define how the Guardian appears, and I’m not sure that the players really cared.

Just a quick question but how Malefax managed to have Force rating 2 ? he seems weak, even more than a newly created character..

And by the way, a character can't do anything before Force rating 2, there is no other way except buying the 25 xp talent at the end of the spec ?

Malefax is an NPC. He have Force rating of 2 because the writer decide it. If I remember correctly, he has the magnitude update for move so he can move PC in the fountain below, just not throw them against a wall to harm them.

As for him being weak, if faced by people with normal weapon and with his mercenaries, he would be ok for a first boss. You can give him adversay or parry if you want but I ran the encounter as written and it was ok. The fight didn't drag out but it still lasted 4-5 round.

Edit: You can use powers like Sense, Ehance, Move, Forsee, Heal with a force rating of 1. Just not the awsome stuff movie characters do. Yes the 25 XP talent is the only way.
