Are you trying to beef up your current ships, or add new ships to your rotation?
Either way, I'd recommend grabbing Imperial Veterans, as a way to beef up your Defender AND be able to run some of the best ships in the game right now.
To beef up the Advanced would be a hefty financial requirement.
Another fun Imperial ship you may like to try would be the Phantom.
Alternatively, the TIE/fo Fighter is one of the few expansion packs that is 100% playable without any upgrades only available in other packs (Omega Leader with Juke and Comm Relay is an absolute monster).
Do you have other faction ships as well? I don't want to suggest ships that require upgrades from other expansions you don't have, otherwise, to really be efficient.
Caveat: If you're just playing casual/just want to play for fun, then grab whatever you think looks coolest! I can absolutely confirm TIE Interceptors are fun to fly, too!
TIE Advanced needs its Title, and the Advanced Targeting Computer is usually what you pair with it. Buy those on ebay if you don't want to shell out for the whole Imperial Raider they come with.
Imperial Veterans if you want to make use of the Defender.
True to source material, the TIE fighter's strength is in numbers. Another TIE Expansion is never a bad buy, unless you already have 8 (the most you can fit in a squad.) The Gozanti Expansion is a good investment for anyone who wants to fly TIE fighters. Two models and new pilots? Yes please. You might get those separately on ebay as well, if you don't want to buy the epic ship.
Also, ArbitraryNerd nailed it with the TIE/fo expansion. Best value for money in the Imperial Faction.
TIE/In are the bread & butter of imp aces but require 3 sets to be viable (TIE/in for Soontir Fel, Imp. Aces for title, and Starviper for Autothrusters)
TIE/D only needs 2 sets (Imp. Vets. for Titles, TIE/Pu for TIE mk/2)
TIE/Adv. needs 2-3 sets but one is epic (TIE/Adv. for Vader, Raider for Title & ATC, and TIE/Adv. benefits from engine upgrade)
TIE/Adv. Prototype remains viable and mostly self contained
TIE/Ph remains viable and mostly self contained but is difficult to fly
TIE/Fo is entirely self contained and Omega leader can terrify opponents that rely on evasion

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the Imperial old guard, spending $50-65 dollars (depending on current prices) just so you can fly Soontir Fel is a waste. He had his glory days as top dog in the game, but each new wave makes the Ol' Baron less viable. In the right hands, Soontir is still an offensive threat and probably always will be, but the fragility of his pathetic 3 hull is more of a liablity with each new expansion.
So, I haven't plugged it on the forum anywhere yet, mostly because I wanted the blog's design re-done prior, but take a look at my post on a competitive buyer's guide, specifically for Imperials:

Imperial veterans is the sensible buy. You get titles for your defenders, great pilots, and a wonderful bomber in tomax.
I gave my nephew my extra Soontir Fel (and named pilots) from my second Interceptor expansion...
Probably someone near you has extra named pilots. That will save you 15 bucks.

... Except you also need the model, dial, and base chit.
Be careful when trying to acquire X-Wing piecemeal. Not only do you need more than people are generally willing to dole out, but you also will miss out on upgrade cards you may find you need later, and then have to either buy the full pack after all, or try to get the cards singly as well, which is hit or miss in terms of cost.

The friggin' base chit! I forgot that!!! Good point ArbitrayNerd.
The Dial is no problem, because, as my nephew, they have Imperial Aces expansion.
Who shares the chit with Soontir?? If it's Fel's Wrath, i can give him my extra Soontir Fel chit. ![]()

Let's just say I learned the hard way, early on in my X-Wing career >.<
