Roleplaying Aspects

By CEOWolf, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Typically a writeup that describes a game session. They can be analytical which is a straightforward description of events or literary which uses the events to provide the basis for a story like write up possibly in character.

Oh that sounds fun heh FFG should make a forum in Arkham Horror for this I'd do it! :P

Not true roleplaying but I'll definatly get in character.

I hope like in Netrunner they have like two paragraphs describing each playable character

They have a basic character description on the back of each Investigator Card - or are you looking for something more in-depth?

The page at end of Netrunner rulebook has each playable Core Runner have a like 500 word story detailing their personality and goals.

Ah, yes. They don't do this for every character released though - many of them did get covered in the in-pack inserts, but many were left out too.

Well I bought a Data Pack and they briefly described the guy that came with it so I imagine they'll at least mention an investigator or two per deluxe expansion's story insert.

As I said, many were covered this way Whizzard, Chaos Theory and Andromeda to name just a few) but many weren't (Leela, Hayley, Quetzal).

IIRC they have gotten better with the deluxe boxes having a story for each runner (I believe Creation and Control only covered Kit).

Ah so we can expect Dunwich to have a short story of Jim the lady and whoever else.

Hopefully, yes :)

Thematically The Gathering scene doesn't strike me as fitting every Investigator while a private eye and a scholar(Daisy) would naturally have a study Agnes Skids and Wendy don't. (even the two revealed investigators in Dunwich don't fit a study) so rationalizing the cast to fit every Scenario wouldn't make things viable game wise but as a lore nut how would you guys rationalize this? Perhaps the unfitting investigators are borrowing the house? For example say you are like me and want to be in character with your partnering player. Maybe one of you is Daisy or Rowland and other player is Agnes. Perhaps the leader is Daisy and in game wise Agnes is visiting Daisy while they investigate the string of Ghoul attacks?

Well I think of it like arkham horror or eldritch horror. A group of people that come together realizing there is something greater to deal with that overshadows race, occupation, sex and what not. Heck, you can say they were at another investigators house waiting on them to exchange information when suddenly the campaign started.

I thought the opening scene was weird too. The door disappeared and the investigators have to find another way out but it's your house, wouldn't you already know of another way out. How did all those corpses just suddenly pop out? Maybe they had only just moved in or something or were they teleported to an alternate dimension?

I think it might be better if the investigators were just investigating the house instead.

Another thing is how allies could be played while the investigators are trapped in the house.

But i am going to ignore these weird situations and just play the game.

I like rationalizing everything in a game putting mechanics aside. (save exceptions lets not get off topic)

The picture of Study has no windows only a door missing so it assumes that the door was the only exit or entrance. Most studies in that era were on second floor or often had no windows and were on first floor.

The allies can have any number of sensible explanations. Guests in your house a partner your working case on etc etc.

The Agenda card clearly states the house is warping. (and hell the corpse in attic has no text saying it's been there for months. thus it's assumed it's a maid or butler or a guest you knew or another tenant)

The house is changing and becoming something else. That explains how stuff keeps popping up. I will likely simulate RPG aspects by making decisions "in character" instead of as myself/as a player.

How do you mean?

It will be funny if there are 4 investigators, 2 beat cops, 2 research librarians, Mr leo , Dr milan , 2 cats and 2 dogs in the study room at the same time but too bad each investigators can only have 1 ally.

At best you'd have eight characters in one room. (you stepped on my foot!" "No that stepped on your foot.")

I mean make the decision as if I am the character and what he or she would decide to do.

Well, watching the demo game on youtube of the first scenario, it actually explains that the house is shifting around you. Your house isn't quite the same when you do get out of the study. Actually it's very different.

How do you mean was referring to the playstyle he brought up not the house transforming.

I think with this first location, the interesting aspect is going to be 4 Investigators, and 4 Allies, in one study, and if a Ghoul shows up but you successfully evade him, how does that work? There's 8 people in one study - it's not going to be hard for the Ghoul to notice you. I can see if each action were something more instantaneous, like dodging a punch or jumping a desk, but then your next action might be to sit down and read a book. Hard to pigeonhole all of that into a cohesive, believable narrative, with Keystone Kop levels of ineptitude from our bad guys.

Minor detail :P

Seems easy enough; you've got seven other people to hide behind.

Interesting AAR. "So rather than fight the Ghoul Priest, I ducked behind my friends and threw my pet cat at it."
