2 starting dice vs 1 starting die

Learning more about this game -

Looking over the rules it seems you can have 30 points in your starting characters. You can use the 1st cost or 2nd cost, giving you 2 dice, or 1 respectively. That much makes sense.... but in the Gencon Demo, it has for example, Rey and Finn, but Finn only has one die - and from what I can see, it appears that Finn clearly is cheap enough to afford a 2nd starting die.

So why would you deliberately want to start with only 3 dice instead of 4 - if you can afford 4? Is this a simple case of only having 1 Finn die? Does the starter only come with the one die for Finn?

Could that be a problem if you wanted in theory, to build a Darth Vader deck... but need to open TWO legendary boosters with Darth Vader dice? That could be tricky.

Yes, the starter only comes with 1 Finn die. You can buy a second starter to get a second Finn die and you can buy a second Kylo Ren starter to get a second Stormtrooper, giving you starting armies of 28 for the Light Side and 27 for the Dark Side.

Stormtroopers are also gullible from booster packs, so you might not have to buy an additional starter set. I feel that Troopers should be easy to trade for.

You need two of any card for a full available playset, characters are no different.

You wouldn't need a second Kylo starter for the Trooper, but for Mind Probe.

yet the Starters come with 2 Rey dice, and 2 Kylo Ren dice. So does that mean they come with 2 character cards as well? Would you even NEED two character cards? You don't put those in your deck, right?

Just one character card needed. A second copy would be a spare if the original gets wrecked.

You need two of any card for a full available playset, characters are no different.

That is actually not true. Unless a character is unique, you may have AS MANY characters as you can afford. You can run 4 Stormtroopers at 7 points each for a 28 point team. It's not going to be very good, but it can happen.

You need two copies (whether that be card or die or both) of any card that isn't a non-unique character for a full playset.

So if you have 1 copy of Darth Vader (card and die) you will need a second copy to run him at his 2 dice version.

I've corrected subsequent statements to reflect that exception. Thanks.

Oooh, so you aren't restricted to only TWO characters. Now it's all starting to come together. You might run Kylo Ren and 2 Stormtroopers, for example, if you wanted 3 people but also some strength?

Also - even if you were to run 4 characters, do they ALL start the game on the table in play already? Or do you EVER shuffle a character into your deck? And lastly - would those 4 character cards count as part of your 30 card limit? Would a 4 character deck have only 26 cards in the library?

Characters do not count as part of your 30-card deck and they all start in play. They are not shuffled into the deck.

All characters start the game on the field and ready. They are not a part of the 30 card deck as mentioned previously. They follow different deck building and point cost rules.

Why is it the more I learn about this game the more incomplete the starter sets seem to be. Is this game really going to be playable with just two starer sets? (one for each player)

I really want to like this game, but I don't want to sink 30 dollars into something that is no fun to play until you luck out with the right booster packs...

If I'm missing something, someone please correct me. I'd like to be excited about this game but have too many questions left unanswered.

Being able to play and it being fun != having everything.

That seems relevant to the question you asked.

To answer, yes it IS playable AND fun with the starters alone.

Starter sets for games built with an expandable model are naturally going to be incomplete.

They are built as a cheaper, quick, structured intro that will allow players to play a few games to see if they want to buy in further. That's all they are for. They aren't a long term option.

Destiny starters don't give you a full legal deck, but I'd argue they are substantially more complete then either X-wing or Armada Core Sets that allow for really limited replayability and are even dubious as a demo product.

So much like an LCG Core the starters will give you something to try out, but if you plan to play more then half a dozen times you are going to need to buy in further. Which is how any game of the type works.

To me its more of, play starter sets a dozen times and it is so much fun you can't help from buying more because you see the potential with more cards.

I printed off some bootleg starter decks and we've been have a hecka good time with them. Obviously the game is going to be a lot MORE fun once we get booster packs and can customize the decks a bit more, etc.

It's no different than any other CCG. Like, you buy a starter deck for Magic and it's really fun to play some games with. But then you add to it with some packs.

Is there somewhere to find a list of all card? I'm interested in what comes in a booster. Since it includes a dice, it obviously comes with the card relevant to that dice. But how many cards in the set have dice and how many do not? And like the first question stated, can you get Finn in a booster to get his second dice or only in the starter pack?

Would Ray and Kylo show up in booster packs? because getting more of them would be a waste if you own the starters already.

Where did you find the rules? I'm looking for them?
