Trandoshans + MHD

By Rogue Dakotan, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I tried out Trandoshans with MHD yesterday and I think he really helps keep those guys alive long enough to do some damage.

My List:

Bossk

MHD-19

Gideon Argus

Elite Trandoshan Hunters

Trandoshan Hunters

Elite Nexu

Temporary Alliance

My problem with trandos in the past is that they just die too fast. This time with MHD standing by they actually seemed to work well for me. Will have to experiement more with this.

Interesting. I need to try this, as my experience is exactly the same. I guess it's the fact that you want to get close, because other units with similar health seem to work much longer for me.

MHD-19 is one of the best figures to come out of the boxes (Davith is up there for sure as well) and is head and shoulders above most of the other options (shed a tear for Biv, Saska, Verena, Loku, Murne, etc.)

That being said, I don't know if pairing him with Trandos is the best option, they seem to always want to be really close to the opponent to be effective, which is their undoing. I've felt they are too easy to lure in, once their close, usually they can be two-shot out of existence. They can't be reinforced (anyone else think Mercs need another reinforceable deployment card, wink wink Weequay)

I'll have to watch your match, but in my experience, MHD is awesome for hero/figures, that usually have a bit more health/defense and are usually more valuable to keep alive. I have had some success with MHD and wookiees, I'd be afraid, the trandos still die too quickly.

I watched the vid, good game. I wish you would post the command cards used as well somewhere. A lot of the lists you and your opponent use are good gateways for my group.

Any help would be appreciated

I watched the video, interesting game.

Posting the complete decks? Or just the cards that get played?

Complete deck list

I'll keep that in mind for next time.

Would it be better to just have them listed in the video description, or have us show the decks in the video after the game ends?

I'd say showing the deployment cards and command deck at the start of the video would be great.

I know it's obviously going to be a huge amount of extra editing, and possibly not worth it, but if you have a look at some high end X-wing videos (eg. https://youtu.be/NftADQVy3bY?t=15m45s)having the units, health and conditions on the sides would be amazing.

Sometimes if you play the command card, just stick it in front of the camera, so the audience can see it.

Davith forgot his cut and run first turn.

So, do you like those elite Trandoshans? They seem to stick around better and their damage "feels" stronger. I usually don't comment on videos because I hate to sound overly critical. So if your friend reads this, I'm not blasting him, I'm commenting on why I still don't think Trandoshans are super competitive.

Your opponent made 2-3 serious (in my mind) blunders first turn from which he could not recover, and some minor ones.

Minor, stick someone adjacent to your token when deploying, so you can program and not waste movement. Focus Davith if he's going Bossk.

Major 1. Don't throw your main guys way out far out of the action. He's spent 8pts on 2eSabs that split out to grab a terminal and did nothing the first 1.5 turns. If he wanted to grab a terminal, fine, use mak, or send 1 Sab out, but don't put him real far away, he should have got close to the other token to program it on turn 2 and go back and babysit the terminal. You don't need two Sabs to do that, just one, or mak with a little Gideon help in movement. Or send Davith out there to grab terminal, reprogram and slaughter the Trandoshans by your terminal/tackle the Nexu. 2. Don't blow the door unless you are ready to commit to it. The door went down and then he had already spent several deployments (including his heavy hitting Sabs) when the door went down. Your Trandoshans would not have lasted long even with MHD, if he had actually shot them. When Leia and the Sab shot at a Trandoshan, they killed it, but he never shot them after that, he should have pressed the attack and kept shooting them, he gave up too quickly and ran away and let you pick his guys off one at a time.

Imagine 5 Sab attacks and Leia = at least 3 dead Trandoshans and some blasts on Bossk. Yes Bossk would have wrecked some guys with a grenade, but with 5 speed, he should mitigate that into 2-3 guys taking hits with the grenade and one dying to shots. Bossk heals, but carries over some damage or MHD comes up to heal him putting himself at risk next turn. Bossk will die if outnumbered, he'll take a few with him, but he'll die(ESP with element of Suprise coming up quickly)

Just my 10cents, match could've gone a lot differently

I agree, I also feel like in the opening turn it was like the player on the right was "feeling" things out versus making a plan to execute if that makes sense

Yeah graphical overlays and things like that would be nice, but aren't going to happen unless we get a lot of really generous Patrons all of a sudden. :P

I'm currently working with a Nokia Lumia 1020 on a tripod and an Olympus Digital Audio recorder and Windows Movie Maker....

I'm just curious, what does it take to make the graphic overlays and point totals and stuff? Or to put digital overlay of the command card all nice and hi-red on the screen when someone uses it? Or to put up mini digital cards of both lists, one on each side and put red x's over them when they die?

I really don't know what it takes to do something like that. Other than I know it takes a good chunk of post editing to do

But having a game where there's a running commentary (even put in afterwards) is awesome! I think it was nationals 2015 there was a game that had commentary and I really enjoyed that one.

But I do appreciate the big bump in videos and podcast that have been coming lately. I can't even keep up with all of it :)

Putting a little picture pop-up whenever a command card is played doesn't sound like too much trouble; if I had decent video editing software.

I'm just using the free software that comes with windows. Which, if I ever start doing anything more than just the one long single-shot, might start looking a bit cheap.

At the moment spending money on new video software just isn't an option. Though I would love to take more time on a video to add pictures of the cards and stuff like taht as the match went along if I had the means to do that.

I really appreciate that you watched the video though. If we get one view then it was worth it. We'll hopefully have some more IA content on our podcast soon too.

I think it would take more effort than you think to go through and watch all the video's again and editing to put in images MasterChief.

I know from my point of view I already spend 1-2 hours on each one adding intro/outro plus descriptions etc. when I need to keep up with family life (3 daughters) and try and get some painting in as well as playing the game, it's just not really practical.

TBH speaking for myself I don't normally watch them before I upload them, so watching the whole video again to go through and add command cards would be quite a job. I think Rogue is in a similar position to me where we just do this as a bit of a hobby and to try and share our experiences (I know for me so far I've gotten about £20 from Patreons and spent about £250 on camera, tripod, editing software)

It's probably not practical for us to keep up 1-2 video's a week and also add those little touches as well.

Hope I'm not treading on your toes answering on your behalf Rogue :)

Hey Rogue, I'm going to be out in AZ in November. I wish I had known you were out that way (or that I had more time out that way to get together)

If you do have a big tournament sometime, I'd like to maybe sneak in and participate with the excuse to see my brother ;)

I'm still working on trying to build up the Imperial Assault Skirmish scene in town. As you might expect X-Wing is huge but IA doesn't really have the numbers yet.

YOU DON'T KNOW ME!

jk.

Yeah that's about it.

Don't make unnecessary "work" command lists in the description and showing your hands at the beginning of the game (to the cam) and when you play a card saying it so it can be heard clearly are simple easy solutions. Dont worry about a graphic interface just find a good camera angle. A top down would be most ideal vs the from one side but I am sure propping a camera like that would need some ingenuity. Just my suggestions for more effective vids with less editing for you

No I get that it's extra work - I was more wondering what actual software and resources it takes? Like I said, just curious.

For regular and consistent videos it's not feasible, now I know :)

And I definitely wouldn't want someone to go backwards and try to update everything that'd be crazy difficult.

I do think it'd be awesome if someone went to World's recorded the final game (and even semi's) and put a little extra stuff into it to polish it up :)

And like I said earlier, thanks again to you guys who are putting out videos/podcasts and making content!

The final will be live streamed on FFG's twitch.

Not sure if they'd want people taking their video and tweaking it.

All three of us at The Jodo Cast will be at Worlds (2 for the SW LCG and I'll be a Judge for IA).

Thanks for watching again! I'll try to keep doing one video a week, but might be missing this weekend's usual game (Gears of War 4 is coming out and demands my time and also I'm playtesting a boardgame I'm designing).

Again thanks for watching. Let's me know I'm not wasting my time on these vids. :) I really appreciate everyone's feedback.
