2 careers to go, who's putting their money where and why

By Funk Fu master, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Down to Spy and Engineer, who's got bets on what?

My money and hopes are for Engineer, to round out the crafting rules with vehicle crafting. Specialisations I speculate as Shipwright (to go with crafting) a double up from Special mods (droid tech I'd say) and maybe weaponsmith, as the alliance would need to construct and maintain personal and vehicle weapons. Outside chance for pioneer to utilse the fortifications rules from Forged in Battle

Spy I have applied less thought on, and they will probably hold off until after rogue one is released. Maybe spymaster or handler (think Varyss or robert Redford in Spy Game) another spec could be a social spy or diplomatic manipulator.

The logistical requirements for any kind of vehicle crafting outside of maybe a Hot Wheel makes me considerably skeptical about ever seeing a form of player usable vehicle crafting. A list of suggestions for GMs for building their own vehicles, maybe, but not a player mechanic.

I would rather see spy next. The career could use some new specializations to round it out and fill some holes in it. Special Modifications has already scratched my tech itch for now.

Spy is my choice, as well. I think it has more going for it than Engineer.

As much as I badly want to see another book that my Engineer could put to go use, I think the Spy needs more love.

Spy all the way!

It's crying out for a Charming Spy, I would love an Interogator (Coercion + Medicine for bad people), and a Ranged Light/tech

character (a mix of Gadgeteer and Marshal)

As much as I would love to see the Spy next, my data predicts that the Engineer is more likely to be the next AoR career book announced.

Sorry, Spy fans :( .

Of course I know that I shouldn't ask, but how do you compute the likelihood of one career book vs. another?

My friend Tommy has been pulling his hair out waiting for the spy book. Wonder if there will be a hartbreaker tree for the 007 fans.

You're the best, Rich :P !

Super-secret Force powers and a Signature Ability that only Togruta Mystics can use

Um, *cough*

Women's intuition.

Marcy's got it right, as usual :P !

I'm not saying which one is right, of course...

My guy says that the Spy book is the bounty hunter of the AoR line, so it will be last.

For it to be the Bounty Hunter of the AoR Spy would have to first be one of the most requested books and then take a long time to come out. I have a feeling that the turn around on Spy will be shorter than Bounty Hunter. Thus it can never be to AoR what BH is to EotE.

Honestly I think with the AoR line they covered the more requested material earlier than they did for EotE.

I doubt any career will wait as long as Bounty Hunter did.

My suspicion is that FFG is trying to close out AoR and F&D career books roughly at the same time hense why we've seen a more rapid release of career books.

You and Marcy both :) . And to be fair, I'm starting to think you're both right!

It does make you wonder what they are clearing the slate for. The Region and Adventure books all take time to produce, but I would think more of that can be farmed out to freelancers than the Career boks

My guess working up to a second edition tied to the New Trilogy and more in line with Disney's current world building. If they close out this edition without first completing the career books they'll anger a lot of fans. If they speed the process up a bit they can swing in a new edition to tie into the new movies.

Ha, interesting idea. I had a feeling they would try to do something else for a while, rather than the burn out that could come from a back to back system. Tthe L5R thing seemed like a good 2 year side project to go on (2017-2018) before releasing the SW revised version in 2019 in time for the final in the new trilogy. With Disney still planning on years worth of Star Wars movies going into the 2020's that could be a good time for their revision.

I guess there isn't much that actually needs revision though, Space Combat and Defence are the only major system flaws. So most of the second ed would be new fluf and artwork... probably something easy to manage

I don't see L5R having much of an impact on the writing of the books for this line. Granted I also think a new rpg for L5R is likely longer off than people want it to be.

That's pretty much my thinking. If they aim for this next year, then it will be 4 years since EoE came out, and they'll probably think that's enough time for a new edition.

I was half-expecting a new Core Rules Book with Force Awakens, and when they didn't do that, it was a pretty big indication that it will be a 2nd edition version instead.

I'm also betting that they don't market it as 2nd edition, but just as a 'Force Awakens Star Wars' game. I would also be very surprised if they went the 'three Core Books' version again. Everything will all be under one large cover, I think. I assume they'll expand it with career books and setting books as they do now.

I'd also assume they'll just quietly drop the old games, as they won't want to be in competition with themselves. They will push the new stuff as being 'backwards compatible' anyway, which it mostly will be. Frankly, the difference between the settings is extremely small in any event, as almost everything in the new film was taken from the originals, except we now have new names for the same things.

Granted, this is just a hunch, but I've been in the hobby a while and you get a feel for when things are changing. Disney hasn't exactly been subtle about exerting pressure in the last year either.

Not sure what it will mean for me personally, as I'm not feeling the new movies, and came back specifically because of the original movie setting. But this stuff always happens, and four years isn't a bad time span for a modern RPG. A few players of mine have pointed out that our version feels more like the new stuff anyway (the returned Jedi, the Empire in ruins, twenty years after Alderaan, etc) so it's perfectly possible we just adapt the new stuff and keep going.

P.S. The sky is falling!!!! :)

Clearly they are trying to blow out the manuscripts before the licenses expires and the game line is shut down.
