Force Weapons - what happens when you strike an object and use the power?

By Mr Adventurer, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Force Weapons are in the Inquisitor's Handbook. They allow you to use a unique ability that functions in the same way as a psychic power; when you do so, you make an Opposed WP Test against the target that you hit and deal +1d10 damage for each Degree of Success that you achieve.

Does anyone know what happens when you hit an object or feature, basically anything that doesn't have its own WP score? Do you just make a straight WP Test and add dice of damage from your DoS on that?

The easiest thing to do would b e to just give the items in question a WP of 0. Roll to see how frail the item is toward the Force energy.

The fastest woulld be to make the Psyker in question roll a WP test to see how many DoS they manage and just narrate the outcome.

I could be wrong here, because I can't quote a rule from anywhere. In fact, I don't know that I remember such a rule. But my group always played it like so: inanimate objects are unaffected by the special power of a force weapon. Since the power requires an opposed WP roll, anything that doesn't have WP, is immune to the power.

If you want to destroy an inanimate object, I recommend a Krak grenade or Melta-weapon. happy.gif

Except that that doesn't make any sense from a 40K universe point of view. Force Weapons channel the aggressiveness and psychic ability of the user into the blade. What your target happens to be is of little difference.

I'd say just make the WP test, and apply +D10 damage for every DOS.

I see it this way:

The power of the wielder increases the damage and penetration, according to the fluff.

However, since an insentient object has no psyche to crush and no nerve system to fry the special ability does nothing.

'nids and Necrons have one or even both of these, so they can be fried. A real machine, or a simply large rock has neither, therefore is not effected by it.

Okay, having re-read the description of Force Weapons, I am inclined to agree with you. Use whatever system works best at the time, with the least amount of dice-rolling and hub-bub. gui%C3%B1o.gif

I am of the "Force Weapons can do TERRIBLE things to inanimate objects" school of thought. In particular: have you seen what eldar force weapons can do to vehicles?! Wytch Blades and Singing Spears used properly hit about as hard as a frickin' lascannon!

Space Marine Librarians are also known to do "BAD THINGS" to their foes in melee.

Now check out some Grey Knight on Demon action.... Nemesis Force Weapons used in squads... OUCH! (Bypasses a demon's doubled toughness in addition to the usual force weapon rules would be my ruling for DH games based on the tabletop rules, not that anything short of a Grey Knight or a very special Malleus Inquisitor would ever be allowed to touch one...)

I would not go with an opposed roll using 0 as the base Willpower, as that would grant anywhere from +1D10 to +9D10 to your damage, which is stupidly high. Just go with a nice, simple unopposed WP test using DOS for the bonus.

Using the force weapon for extra damage uses up the Psyker's power-use action for the turn, so it is not like this is unbalancing... Think of it as a dramatic use of a weapon instead of them just hurling bolts of righteous fire at your baddies for the 107th time!

According to the tabletop game force weapons attack the soul directly, and have no effect on vehicles (except Eldar ones for some reason)

Remember, Wraithlords and Wraithguard, in spite of being mechanical constructs, do have souls. That is, afterall, how they're piloted - a conscious soul of a dead Eldar implanted into the armoured carapace of the 'ghost-warrior'.

Beyond that, all Eldar technology is psychic to some degree.

And if you meant Eldar force weapons (witchblades and singing spears) they seem to work differently. Charged with psychic energy in a different way so to speak.
