A-Wing is that stub "fighter" Germany used towards the end of the war. That was really a rocket with a cockpit.
Ships comparisons to current aircrafts today.
I don't see Me-109 and Mitsubishi Zero as cheap-mass produced fighters like the TIE/ln...
Even though it was not mass produced due to Germany had reduced production that time, for me, the TIE WWII equivalent is the Heinkel He-162 "Volksjager"/"Salamander". Fast, cheap, and disposable.
Edited by JadotchLooking at these thread answers, looks like no one else in the world made fighters except for America...
Every time this kind of thread pops up, the same answers come. You still can't compare made up spaceships to aeroplanes that are 70 odd years old.

Star wars fighters were always meant to emulate WWI dogfights, so it seems appropriate
I think the Lancer-class pursuit ship (a.k.a. "Shadowcaster") is more inline with a A-20 Havoc or A-26 Invader.

The ME 109 was second in production only to the Russian IL 2. Almost 34000 of them were produced. They also probably shot down more aircraft than any other. The top 109 ME 109 pilots alone shot down almost 15000 aircraft.
A wing fits the ME109/Spitfire/A6M/F8F category. Small, fast highly maneuverable, and under armed to an extent. Spits had to star 30 cal and 50 cal, ME 109 7.62MM and 20mm, same for A6M The end war F8F had50 cal 4 vs most US planes having 6, later up gunned to 4 20mm cannon.
A-wing would have little if anything in common with the P-38 as far as mission characteristics and performance.

Germans flying Bf-109s may have achieved a 21:1 kill ratio on the Eastern Front, but the Finns managed a 33:1 kill ratio with the obsolescent Brewster Buffalo and Fiat G.50.
Hakkaa päälle!

Yep, I know. Being the basic fighter for the Luftwaffe the whole war, obviously was produced in great quantities. Me109's military career started in Spanish Civil War in 1936, and Spain itself had a actualized version in their air forces till 1965
But i don't recall being a cheap fighter. Mass production and "lower quality" was not a nazi-german thing.
The only one german fighter i read to be produced as cheap and disposable was de He-162, but i could be wrong. And that was because in the last days of the 3rd reich, they become desperated and open to new and radical possibilities.
What about roles? Air Superiority; Close Support; Support; Bombers; Fighter/Bomber; Heavy Assault; Heavy Bomber
I would be curious what your thoughts on where the ships fit in, Rebellion and Imperial. Even the S&V ships too.
Main Line Fighter: X-Wing T-65; TIE/Ln
Assault Fighter: TIE Defender
Bombers: TIE Bomber
Fighter Bomber: Y-Wing
Heavy Bomber: K-Wing; TIE Punisher
Please fill it in.
Tie Defender is the F22 Raptor
A-Wing similar to the P-38 Lightning.
A-wing is more like a Spitfire. Fast attack that swarms, but can't really do anything to heavy armor.
ME 163 Komet is an A-wing
The YTs are more naval analogy than airforce. They're definitely Q-ships and commerce raiders.
Except The ME163 did not maneuver. Went up made a pass and went down. Did not engage other fighters.
YT raiders, without the advantages that are built in. Q-Ships and raiders faired poorly, from 1900 on, previously to that in the age of sail they were fairly effective.

I think we have to assume that "Outer Rim Smuggler" and "Wild Space Fringer" are typical commerce raiders (and probably lack much success). The Millenium Falcon and Outrider have legendary captains and plot armor.
I see the converted Freighters as something like Mcdonnell Douglas DC-1 with some patched up guns, a turret from a B-17...
Probably a DC-1 is not a good analogy with the Millenium Falcon, which should be something heavily modified, or something like an Arado Ar-234...

If the Hercules is a freighter (albeit more military than civilian) - then the Spectre and other gunships might be the closest analog to the Falcon - take a freighter, and give it heavy weaponry.
The Hercules (gunship version) has the armament to be something feared in the battlefront, but i don't feel it has agility and speed the Falcon is supposed to have.
Maybe an armed private jet?
When talking about roles I don't know if aircraft is the right comparison. Either ships (commerce raiders) or land vehicles are a better comparison. The Falcon is more like an up-engine, up-armored, A-Team style van with a ring mounted HMG.

If you go back to tie in material from the ROTJ movie, the Falcon's sublight speed is not all that high compared to the other fighters:

i saw this site earlier today which listed top 15 fastest ships
http://screenrant.com/fastest-ships-in-star-wars/?view=all
the falcon is top on there.
i haven't really looked into comparisons with aircraft but given the fluidic nature of the star wars space, i think comparing them to submersibles might be more appropriate
"Speeds" on the above site, are speed in atmosphere - the ships have extremely high accelerations (thousands of G, 1 G is about 10 m/s/s, so that's accelerations of tens of thousands of m/s/s) - some accelerations are referenced in newcanon books - and, as such, it's likely that they vastly exceed those speeds while in space.

More lies of the rebel propaganda, i guess...
But from that table... TIE /LN with med speed and maneuverability? Seems odd.
I know they're not airplanes, but the Millennium Falcon is a souped-up semi trailer that regularly cruises into battle next to tanks and is somehow tougher, faster, and better armed than any of those tanks.
it's Rhino from M.A.S.K . Venom's Switchblade is a modified TIE advanced that transforms to a Phantom.
