Errata

By reptile74, in Dark Heresy

Last time I tried to start up a campaign my plans failed because of lack of time, so now during the winter holiday I thought to give it another go, But...

I browsed through this site and found the Official Errata, and that really put me off. Almost 15 pages of "mistakes" the core book (and the handbook) is full of them! I paid a lot of money for those books and still... and this is version 3 !

Anyway, we made characters yesterday and now I've to go through what other skills and talents that my players could buy from start, and check if they want to change anything. Well this is mostly an outlet for my dissapointment of this situation. I hoped that most errors had been fixed in later printings, but nope...

And this is also the reason I never pre-order any RPG books or buy any special edition books for twice or thrice the money - you get a fancy cover but the content is still ridden with errors.

So you only looked at the page count?

Most of the current errata is clarification, not correction; lots of pages of re-stating and summarising what's already in the book in a different way for improved clarity. The current errata document also includes the errata from the Inquisitor's Handbook.

And I wouldnt call them all misakes either. They are revisions, clarifications and updates. The core rule book, even from BI days works just fine without the errata. You are reading too much in it.

I scrolled through the pages and found that the skills and talents for most of the careers that my players decided to play hadn't been updated in my printing at least. Maybe I overreacted, but I felt I had to be a bit whining bout it. Maybe it will come to some effect in the future.

I must admit that I was a little disappointed that the second printing of the core rules still had enough "discrepancies" to warrant more errata. One glaring omission was the fact that all Bolt Weapons should have the Tearing quality. But of course, there were other things. Still, however, the overall quality of the product(s) seem more than satisfactory to warrant their cost. Granted, I buy all of my gaming books on Amazon, where the prices are 20-30% below retail. Oops! Sorry if that violated any forum rules. lengua.gif

Anyway, while some of these things can be annoying ... I have to say that I am most happy with FFG so far. Good work, FFG! gran_risa.gif Keep 'em coming.

My only real gripe to date is, I want more fluff ... er, lore. More "people, places, plots, histories, character connections, organization connections, potential plot-hooks, etc. But, that is just me.

Does anyone know if the PDF you can buy incorporates the errata? And is it searchable?

I have bought it. Sadly, it doesn't incorporate the errata.

However, it is fully searchable and has a very detailed bookmark table.

Yeah, it has a lot of errata. And a lot of mistakes in the book as well.

However, in first place be sure pay attention to the fact that the Full Auto gives one hit each single degree of success (and not two degrees, as opposed to the Half-Auto). And second, take a look at the carreers table.

Also there is a corrected career progression tree available see the forum thread here .

You are right to be disappointed with all the Errata that are obviously needed. I don't care if they are clarifications or outright mistakes ... books like this should not have so many errors in them, period. They annoy the hell out of me too.

But hey we want to play this great game so what can you do.

I am just recently getting into the game as well, and had the initial reaction the OP did, it seemed like an awful lot. It made question whether I needed the errata or if playing core without was fine.

This makes me feel better that it works fine without errata.

Well no, some of them are mistakes. Just that most of them aren't. You'll still need the errata for the actual corrections.

One thing to keep in mind is the time of DH.

1)Black Industries Released DH

2)DH is nearly sold out in many stores

3)BI stops doing RPGs

4)FFG get the DH license

5)FFG does a quick reprint

The 2nd reprint really isn't a 2nd edition. It was done in a hurry because there was pent up demand for the DH book as is. The 2nd Errata is basically FFG developers fixing what they view as basic flaws in DH. (Some real, some a matter of opinion.) I prefer errata as it's more balanced, but I've run campaigns before it come out, and the game worked just fine.

Yes, but you can still play the game all the same without the errata and the BI version of the game.

Um... obviously needed? Would you mind elaborating which parts of the Errata you're talking about? Because they aren't quite as obvious to me as they seem to be to you.
