Clarification on the tractor beam

By Stoneface, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Need a clarification regarding the direction of the boost when hit by a tractor beam. Is the one straight template always put behind the target ship? If the target is pointing at you it's boosted towards you and if facing away it's boosted away from you?

Two players new to the tractor beam effect and weren't entirely sure if you, the firing ship, had the option of a push or a pull.

You always place the template on the front guides of the target ship for the boost, and it's always with the 1-straight template, not the 1-bank.

Just to be clear, if the target is facing away from the firing ship, it's boosted (pushed) 1 straight away from the attacker and if facing the attacker, it's boosted (pulled) 1 straight towards the attacker.

Correct. You can only boost in a forward direction. You can't boost backwards. It might be easier if you forget about the target ship's orientation with the attacker and just focus on the fact that it has to go forwards from where ever it happens to be and it doesn't matter which way it's facing. For the target ship, forwards is always going to be forwards. If you refer to the Boost Action reference card, (or the BIG Reference Card ;) ), step 2 says "Set the maneuver template between the ship’s front guides." The tractor beam does nothing to change that. It only restricts you to the 1-straight template when you choose a boost effect.
