Alternative Magnet Idea (Just the idea...)

By Rinzler in a Tie, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I've always appreciated the standard ball-and-nut magnet setup and have even applied it to one of my ships.

But I've also always wanted to try using cylinder magnets with a bent washer or a ground down nut.

I tried desperately to supply pictures of examples of these magnets and washers but the forum kept kicking them back, saying "You are not allowed to use that image extension in this community" ... I don't know.

Google "cylinder magnet" for the full effect.

I'll wait.

This will allow tilting left and right but not the wonky direction you get from a bumped ball-and-nut setup.

Thoughts? Has anyone done this?

I haven't done that, but I have attached the magnet such that the flat surface is vertical on both the peg and the ship on my K wing (if you're having difficulty picturing it, it's the same orientation as the B wing). this allows the ship to bank and only bank. I did have to build it up a little bit with green stuff around the magnet on the ship in order to secure the magnet to the ship. When I get home, I can take a picture if you want.

Yeah I'm interested to see how you did this.

I think you're onto something about the difficulty of attaching an odd-shaped magnet.

Aha! I found the picture I posted to the Facebook group.

I haven't magnetized any of my ships but I always thought that this configuration would work pretty well:

It allows for banking & yaw if you align the cylinder and the ship down the long axis.

It works kind of like a see-saw (or teeter-totter if you prefer...).

Has anyone tried with a cylinder magnet in the ship and a ball bearing (not magnetic) on the stand? Are the ships to heavy for that arrangement?

In my expierence you will varying results. Sometimes it will hold just right and others it will shift forward or backward or to the side.

I have alternate idea I will be trying. Using a clear acrylic nut, placing a small but strong neon magnet at the bottom and round bb new magnet at the base of the model. This will allow the bb magnet to sit into the nut. If the polarity is correct hopefully it will work. I'm not sure on polarity for bb magnet. I have all the parts and can update when it's done.

I've done this sort of set up on (nearly) all of my small based ships, and it's fantastic. I'm not really a fan off the ball-magnet method because I never want my ships pointing up in the air or off to the side or etc, I just want to be able to tip them to the side (ie: change their yaw) when they make hard turns.

Doing it was pretty easy- just get a bunch of small, powerful magnets and glue one to the flat part of a peg, and the other one to the back side of the ship's peg. As an added bonus, doing it this way still allows you to put the ships on normal unmagnetized pegs. :)

That sounds like a great way to do it. My peg on the K KEPT falling off, so it wouldn't work for that, but for a normal ship that sounds wonderful!
