HWK 170... I mean, ARC 290... I mean...

By GreenLantern1138, in X-Wing

Talking to the Rebel players here.

When I first started playing x-wing about a year ago, I had a HWK. I never really gave it much of a chance, and eventually it went on eBay. The question I'm here to ask is: should I get another one? The reason I ask is that a few waves have come and gone now, so there are talents, modifications, crew and weapons that a HWK could use that might make it better, and playing a couple of games with the ARC170 made me subconsciously compare them, given that they're kinda sorta support ships.

I prefer the HWK abilities over the ARCs, but the ARC dial is quite good imo, whereas the HWK has the worst in the game. I like that the HWK has two green dice and I still think the ARC should have had two. That said, the HWK has nearly half the total hp of the ARC. The Moldy Crow title is still really useful, but at 3 points the ship's cost starts to stack up considering it won't personally contribute much in the way of fighting.

Any Rebel players use a HWK still these days? I don't see much talk about them, unless it's about Scum. If you do use them, do you ever use a HWK and ARC at the same time? An expensive proposition, I know. This thread isn't an invitation for a HWK 'fix' discussion.

I've yet to try it, but I've seen people theory-crafting using Nora in the ARC and Jan Ors in the HWK to get some really high-value shots.

The lambda shuttle says "hi"...

It's definitely a niche ship. It has some applications but you have to work pretty hard to get your points worth. Scum versions are generally more useful but even then, they're hard work. I've seen Roark used to good effect with a swarm of low PS generics (a long time ago mind you). Kyle and Jan have some utility but generally only if you have a plan for them. Jan can get those crazy high dice attacks but it tends to be a one-hit-wonder.

I find the comparison for rebels for the HWK is inevitably to the attack shuttle rather than the ARC. The shuttle has one less total hull and shield for roughly the same cost, it also has a crew, a turret and the higher pilots all have EPTs. But it has 3 full attack dice, and can evade, barrel roll and has a much better dial.

Hwks are for scum

Seriously, palob/mux are unreal good fun

The hwk in general is just such a garbage base ship that you're only using as a TLT and pilot ability caddie. To that end, the scum hwks are far far more attractive.

But if you've seen a ps 12 ghost do work, Roark doesn't look so bad either

More than 1, though? Don't think you would over a more sturdy Y

Scum hwk's are super fun, or we'll Palob and mux are. Throw tlt to make up for the low fire power. They are actually common in u boat lists, at a regional I played in, mux and two scouts made the top 8 and had the second best mov un swiss

You have to be able to work in the pilot abilities. Its not worth getting more than 1, due to its lack of firepower, but there's really no way to replace Jan in a list that features her.

Indeed. That extra attack dice is worth its weight in gold against Imperial Aces who are used to having more green dice/tokens than you have red dice to throw at them.

Especially since it works with secondary weapons, if relevant, and doesn't have any hard-to-meet triggers like Expose or Opportunist.

I think the HWK got shafted in dial, man. It's a fast little ship.

But! I still use them! And so far, they've not failed me terribly.

The Kyle Kartan - Jake Farrel combo has failed me very few times. I even placed 2nd at a store tournament with them.

I usually fly them like this + Poe or Wedge

• Jake Farrell
A-Wing Test Pilot
Chardaan Refit
Juke
Autothrusters
Push the Limit

• Kyle Katarn
Juke
Twin Laser Turret
Jan Ors
Moldy Crow

ive seen 4x hwk list that were cool

Roark and Ors are okayish. Roark + Cracken(swarm tactics) makes for a pretty nice baseline for a squad.

I don't know if I agree about 4xhwks beeing cool lists. The ones that did OK all spammed TLT as far as I remember?

This is the list that ended my day in the first round of the cut at regionals. Kyle and Jake are best friends.
