Almost there... Almost there... It's Away!!

By Underachiever599, in X-Wing

Just a silly thought I had for an EPT, and I couldn't help but share it with you guys.

It's Away - 1 point

After you perform a [torpedo] secondary weapon attack, you may discard any remaining secondary weapon cards to increase your agility value by one. If you do, your action bar loses the [target lock] action icon.

Thematically, you've dropped your payload, and have deactivated the targeting computer so you can focus more on evading enemy ships. Originally, I was thinking of letting it trigger after discarding a card to perform a secondary weapon attack, then I realized just how bonkers it'd be with missiles. A-Wings and TIE Advanced Prototypes getting 4 agility after having fired off XX-23 S-Thread Tracers? Nope, can't have that! So, I limited it to just torpedoes. This upgrade would probably help bring X-Wings and E-Wings back to the table (Four green dice!), and would give a nice boost to ordinance-based B-Wings and Y-Wings once they've fired all their shots. It would also likely revive the use of Flechette Torpedoes, as they're the cheapest way to enable this benefit.

So, tell my why it's an absolutely stupid idea.

...

Well...

... Aside from the fact that Contracted Scouts can take them. Shoot. Well, there goes that idea.

Edit: Forgot that no Rebel Y-Wings have EPTs, and only one Scum Y-Wing has one.

Mmmm bombers

In its current form, it would only help at most one Y-wing, as they lack a pilot with an EPT.

Woops. I keep forgetting that Y-Wings don't really have EPTs. So, correction. It could help one Y-Wing for Scum, and only one Y-Wing at a time for Rebel Scum.

I like the idea, but as you said, the execution is not yet correct. One thing would be to limit the effect based on the ship's agility. It could increase agility by 1, or grant a free Evade token. OTOH, the "after you fire" effect means low PS pilots will still be dead before "it's away!"

Now that you've got me thinking, another idea might be "I'll Cover You!" EPT. If you are within range 1 of a ship that is carrying torpedoes or missiles, you must be the target of attacks if possible.

It's Biggs, but only if you are escorting a ship with a payload to deliver.

Just add a 'small ship only' qualifier, and you're in business.

Eh, it's not quite that bad, considering it's permanent agility, and the stuff that can actually take this typically has a lot of health. B-wings, a single Y-wing, Firesprays, TIE Bombers, TIE Punishers, and Jumpmasters are the only ones capable of taking this upgrade, and of them.

Also, jumpmasters taking it wouldn't be that bad. They would have to replace Deadeye which makes them a lot easier to dodge.

Jumpmasters without Deadeye can have this card just fine … not that they would ever take it ^-^

I do like the escort idea. It can be a one time use card:

Bomber Escort(unique): EPT, 2 points. At the beginning of the combat phase, you may discard this card. If you do, other friendly ships at range 1 with an equipped missile/torpedo/bomb cannot be targeted by attacks if the attacker can target you.

This could also just apply to a basic escort card without the need of the other ships having the ordnance, it would have to cost more than 2 to not be OP. It could have a PS requirement for the escorted ship as well.

it's a bad idea because it increases agility

ie adds more green dice

ie, does absolutely nothing, like Finn without target-locks or other means of re-rolling the inevitable blanks

I don't like this thematically - if it's representing increased maneuverability from losing the torpedo weight, why is it an EPT?

I've always wanted Rebel Ys to have a better shot at using torpedoes effectively, so why not use the same theme for something slightly different:

Torpedo Bomber - 1 point

Small ship only.

After you perform a [torpedo] secondary weapon attack, you may perform a <SLAM> action.

You can equip this card only if you have <two torpedo upgrades> in your upgrade bar.

Something along those lines to allow some pep after you launch the things.

What about a ship modification called "Empty Tubes." If this ship could carry ordnance but does not or no longer has any, increase agility by 1. Could add the qualifier that the ship must have at least 2 ordnance slots to prevent A-Wings and JumpMasters from getting the benefit.

Too bad slam can never be a free action.
