Why so many pilots in protectorate expansion?

By IG88E, in X-Wing

Don't get me wring, I like it very much, but just curious:

Why we got so many pilots in protectorate expansion? We have 6 pilots, 3 unique and 3 generic (Normally 2 and 2 or at least 4 at max). It is really unusual. Could it be a sign that FFG is never gonna release an aces pack with protecortate fighters?

Scum are catching up so maybe it's because we have less pilots in general.

TIE Interceptor had 6 pilots

Compensate for lack o upgrades

STOLEN tie only gets 4 pilots because it actually comes with some upgrades

This, the ship has basically 0 upgrade slots so it needs something to fill the pack.

Scum version of the arc-dodger. Awings and Interceptors have 6 pilots, so 6 fangs.

Which i dont see as a good excuse really. Awings/Interceptors have 6 pilots because the original ones suck balls on their own and had to have a "fix" released to make them even viable. Theyre still lousy except for the either really-cheap-for-some-reason Green Squad or obscenely powerful ability Soontir/Jax.

Fangs would have been fine without 6 pilots, leaving room for future improvement if needed. Only thing about the fangs that bug the hell out of me is they are advertised as a ship that stares at their opponent dead in the eye while attacking, and ALL their range1 in arc crap doesnt specify Primary Firing arc...so in the same wave that emphasis' on alternate firing arcs, theres a ship that counters it hardcore.

Arc dodging has nothing to do with that. It's the lack of upgrades. A-wing had 4 pilots initally, but Interceptor had 6 from the very start, just like TIE Fighter (not counting core set), TIE/fo and probalby some others.

Meanwhile, ARC-170 has no generics, and their PS3 guy's ability is so unreliable he may as well be blank. Would much rather have had a generic PS3 Arc with no pilot ability for 1pt less.

...

No, the A-Wing only came with 4 pilots. Rebel Aces gave it two more bringing the total to six. The Interceptor had 6 to start with and then picked up 5 more with Imperial Aces.

With only a few exceptions (all TIEs of some variety I believe) new ship releases to this point have only contained 4 different pilots.

His pilot ability may be random but it's pretty **** good. On its own it isn't bad (paritcularly if you take a red maneuver or if you get double stressed). Coupled with R3-A2 and gunner, it's amazing.

50% of the time

For dice dependent definitions of "50%"

Braylen ability is nice when it triggers but its really the combination of r3a2 gunner that makes him amazing regardless. The ability is just a nice bonus

Wish it were guarateed though :(

And yet it didn't come with a Torpedo which is usually how they fill out packs with useless junk.

Why not?

You'd have to ask the designers.

I mean, I really like the selection of pilots it comes with, and it's fallen pretty neatly into the realm of being balanced, so having a bunch of pilots means they can comfortably sit without needing any additional buffs later, which I appreciate - but I would have liked to see a few more cool cards too :(

I wish they had made a new Torpedo for tis ship. Not saying I don't like the named pilots (all 3 will see use) but a Torp would be better.

It does have that Seismic Torpedo, which is pretty neat.

Nope. That's in the ARC170.

They are all unique to represent how rare the ship is a and in working condition still.

Quite frankly it makes sense that rebels in general have no generics. They dont exactly have a ton of people, each pilot has to be something important to actually justify putting them in one of the few ships they got.

What would you do with a generic ARC anyway? its too expensive to spam and all the nasty shenanigans it can do are pilot-skill dependent or utilize a unique droid.

fill the world's most beautiful display case

You could run 4 in a list if the generics were the same price or cheaper than Braylen. Maybe not the best list but worth it for the wingspan alone.

The argument with the upgrade cards seems legit. Thanks for the answers.
