Are we starting to see the end of the tunnel for this great game?

By chriscook, in Star Wars: Armada

A friend of mine lives in Houston TX. A huge city with plenty of gaming store. He said that Armada is all but dead there. We have 6 players in Buffalo, NY. But its the same 6 over the last year and a half. We have not gotten any new players. Toronto is the 3rd largest city in North America but only 24 players (2 from the US) at its National Tourney a few weeks ago. It will never get the xwing numbers but you would hope we can keep increasing the numbers. I think numbers at Worlds in a month will be the tall tale.

Again?

Can you try and explain again? I didnt understand a word of that.

We already know the numbers as the event is sold out.

Is this an AdmiralNelson puppet account, or are multiple people really this stupid?

Yes. Armada is dead. Give away your ships and quit.

I'll pm you my address and pay postage for the ships.

Armada does not have the tournament scene X-Wing cause it is significantly harder to pick up and play. This does not mean there are not people all over the country pushing Star Destroyers around their kitchen tables with their friends and not going into those stores. They still buy product, same as anyone else, and in many many many cases much more, as they are in it for the aesthetics, instead of only buying what they need to run their tournament list.

X-wing took a couple of years to take off. I would say that Armada is more of a niche game relative to X-wing, thus less people in general will be playing, but that doesn't mean that Armada dead. Our community is small, but passionate and dedicated, and that's what makes it worthwhile.

As for new players, I think it's all about the community. We here in Toronto actively recruit people to play Armada. We often have Armada games at the same time as X-wing and we've been successful in converting a couple people over. We've had two new converts to the game recently and that only bodes well for our meta here.

You're just mad that a Canadian took your US Championship (at GenCon). :)

Also, having team shirts helps out a lot.

From my understanding after Wave 2 there was a massive gap between that and the current waves. No Armada isnt dead its just perhaps a little more niche then X-Wing.

I already used this one on GK today, but it fits here too...

Also, I can't believe we're getting this on the cusp of the Corellian campaign and Wave V. I know we haven't had any news in a while, but seriously - two awesome new ships, dozens of new fighter options, and an official FFG campaign. When did X-wing ever get one of those?

Right? These expansions are going to have a huge impact on the way the game is played and how lists are built. Viable Victories, a possible return to faction specific fighters.

The campaign box is a literal game changer.

In the last 10 months, we built the local Armada scene from two of us to 6+ every Monday during open play. Maybe not huge, but nothing to laugh at for us. Another 3-4 cycle in and out occasion. At least a few others have asked about trying it out

Curious how many people are registered for Armada at worlds? I'm playing Friday day 2 so I'm curious how many people are for each day and if they will use the advanced tournament structure or some modified one. I'm counting on at least 4 rounds but wasn't sure if there would be a 4 person cut beyond that to see who the top 2 are to make the Saturday top 4.

From what I've seen at our local store (which I started playing at a few months back), X wing and Armada have grown at roughly the same rate, proportionate to the number of players there originally. There were four of us Armada players, and about eight X-wing - now there are five and ten.

And to be honest, as long as I'm getting a game, and as long as it's not exactly the same guy every week, I don't need the community to be massive. I enjoy playing guys who I know well, and who I know how I compare to - I've been able to tell where I've improved and where I need to learn. Part of the fun becomes trying to outfox the meta. Plus, the variety in X-wing comes with the number of players and number of ships. But in Armada, you've got the objectives to play with, so that, even if you bring the same fleet three weeks in a row, you're still not playing the same game each time.

I dunno. If you want the kind of numbers that X-wing gets, play X-wing.

I know this info is almost old, but I think it is still relevant.

My FLGS sold out all of the new wave they got in despite there never being a game played in the store or a tournament in the store.

Armada is the 3rd best selling miniature game in the US. LINK

Italy is not really the best place in the world when playing Armada: the local licensee, who was never any good to begin with, had some crazy delays in translating and distributing wave 2 and thus it officially landed in may 2016 I think. Then FFG decided they were switching licensee and moving to another company in 2017, so the first licensee got even more demotivated and announced it won't translate wave 3+ ships. As a result I have yet to see my wave 3 ships, while in other cities, depending on a UK reseller, people already have theirs. All this to say: one has to be really motivated to play armada here,

Despite all this, the attendants to this year national were 250% of last year, and in the facebook group we italian players have there is a new player requesting info almost every day. So, to answer the original question: no, Armada is not dead. it's only beginning. Not having the same numbers as x wing is just a plus for me, as I prefer to meet with fewer educated individuals rather than a bunch of screaming kids.

Thats great news!

This is not X-Wing! Again, this is not X-Wing. Competitive play will not be as hot in Armada like it is in X-Wing and it is more for the casual thinking man. It is doing fine dispite not having as much fan fair as X-Wing and FFG is not trying to out do their top game. Armada is a game that compliments X-Wing and is the game that FFG expects older X-Wing players to be more interested in than some new player off the street.

Again, this is not X-Wing or Magic that relies heavily on the competitive scene to thrive, this game is an evolved game that is meant for the more serious gamer and is the fine wine to X-Wing's public friendly beer.

Armada is not dead in Houston. We had a guy buy into it last week. The only thing "wrong" with the community is that a lot of players also play Xwing. If you really want a game to play, you can just post for one on the Facebook group. I should know. :)
