Response Re: Rieeken, End of Status Phase, End of Round

By Drasnighta, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Another one from April today!

Hello, Paul.

In response to your question:

Rules Question:

Quick Question in regards to Timing and Rieekan. The FAQ and new tournament has stated that Ships governed under Rieekan's leadership are not counted as destroyed until the "End of the Status Phase". What timing in relation is there between the "End of the Status Phase" and "End of Round" for such things as Counting Fire Lanes Points? It was my understanding that the Round does not End (End of Round) until the Status Phase has been Completed, at which point you would measure, for example, who controls the objectives in Fire Lanes, WITHOUT the presence of any Destroyed Rieekan ships, as they would have been removed prior to that step in the Status Phase. Is that correct?

Your interpretation is correct. Rieekan’s effect allows a ship to remain in the play area until the end of the status phase, but it is removed before an objective card’s "end of round" effect is resolved.
Thanks for your question!

Nothing against the man, but it seems like I've disagreed with just about every clarification that has come from Michael. Not that one this doesn't make sense within the context of the rules, but rather I think Rieekan should remain until after counting points.

Either way, though, glad to have an answer to this. Thanks for asking it.

I found myself in much of the same position, Ard.

I did feel like Rieekan should . But I couldn't marry that desire with the way the rules were written .

So there's the Clarification, love it or hate it, there it is :D

It basically follows on and settles that, yes, the 4 Phases are encapsulated within the "Round", and that the "Round" does not end until the Phases have been completed.

...

Deductively reasoning, this would follow on to state that the round must Start before the Phases Start, which means that Admiral Titus must be used before Command Dials are set, as I have supported from the start.

Yup, same here. Haven't really seen any disputes on that one, interestingly.

So, if I'm reading this right, this means that say, a dead Rieekan ship doesn't count toward Fire Lane points? That really changes things.

Correct.

So you get your shots etc...but the ships go away before they can rack up VP at end of round.

I guess zombies are good for killing, but not controlling stuff :o

Rest in Peace Rieekan. You had a good run

I'm not sure what to make of this. It was a good question to ask, but it was one that came up in multiple games and GenCon, and someone higher up the chain than Michael clarified it as exactly the opposite. I know we've had some problems with emails in the past being overturned in future FAQs, and I'm pretty sure this issue will hit the FAQ. If they've settled in the other direction, great, that's alright. Its the consistency that gets to me. If the email had read, "we know we've said otherwise in the past, but after group discussion, here is what we'd like to do," it would be a lot more convincing. As it stands, it comes across as one guy reading the rules in isolation of his fellow workers and offering a response that some players at least will certainly take as official.

Here's the Thing.

There is No Chain.

There is only Michael.

Even then, he is the Producer, and thus, was at the top of the chain.

I'd play it like the email states until the FAQ hits. Having this as a guideline is a lot better than guessing. In regards to other answers contradicting each other, I doubt everyone is on the same page as to the rulings. If by chance you get to ask a question, I'm sure they are grabbing at what they currently understand about the rules, or what the non-finalized consensus is.

These emails don't change tournament play because they don't hold any weight. And if you play a casual game, both of you should discuss these emails if it has a chance to alter the game.

If this was the only reason you were using Rieekan, you've been short-changing yourself on his potential...

Yeah, this definitely does not kill Rieekan, only makes him a mere mortal like all the rest of the admirals.

So it impacts what? Fire Lanes and Outpost? Or am I missing something?

He taught me how to look after my ships so I no longer need him.

With ace squads I still love him.

Fire Lanes was quite important to his potency in tournaments. Though that will change when the campaign comes out.

Correct. Otherwise, no difference. And it's really not a big change overall. Rieekan is still 100% legit. He's even more annoying with the GR75s out nowadays...
