Question about combat

By Rosco74, in Game Masters

Hello, just a question about timing in combat.

Do you need a player to "spend" the advantages before resolving the damage he does to an ennemy?

Why? because imagine a Npc has 4 wounds left, the player doesn't know that and does 6 damages with enough advantages to initiate a critical hit. Would you tell him the 6 points of damage are enough to kill the Npc or would you let him "waste" the advantages to initiate a critical hit?

Thanks

Damage is applied before Advantages are resolved.

Ok thanks, so you tell the player his ennemy falls dead and then he can choose where to spend his advantages. Good !

Yes, step 3. Pool Results and Deal Damage, step 4. Resolve Advantages and Triumphs.

Although, if he's fighting a Nemesis, exceeding the wound threshold just means the bad guy takes a critical and is out of the fight. Chances are, he ain't dead yet. If the player really wants to ruin the guy's day, he can use those advantages to trigger the crit again, making it even worse.

I always tell my players if the damage from an attack was enough to drop an NPC, so they can use their Advantages for other things.
