Clarification on Mines

By 4xholic, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Ok, still a newbie and would like clarification on mines. I read a post on here, but it did't quite clear it up.

Seismic Charges:

This one is pretty clear I think:

- reveal your dial, drop bomb, then move - correct?

Then it states charge detonates at the end of the Activation Phase. The question here is when is the end of the Activation Phase?

- At the end of the current players activation phase, or after ALL players have completed their activation phase ?

Proximity Mines:

This one is a little confusing, mainly because I am still learning, but it states it's an "Action", so when do I drop this one?

My thought is:

- Reveal Dial, Move, then drop - correct?

I would appreciate any help, thank you.

The end of the Activation Phase is after everyone has moved and just before combat starts. Any bombs dropped explode then.

Mines typically require an action to drop so that happens after your maneuver has been completed. Unless you have Advanced Sensors, in which case you can take your action before moving.

Keep the little reference cards handy. They have all the info you need on when they're dropped, how they explode and the kind of damage done.

Hope this answers your questions.

Thanks, I appreciate the help.

There's no "the current player's activation phase". Players don't take turns in this game, ships do. If that sentence confuses you, ignore it and just look at the Round entry in the rules reference, and the entries for the individual phases.

Bah!... little reference cards are for wimps. Get the BIG Reference Card!

I forgot about those! You're quite right, the BIG reference cards are the only way to go!

For what it's worth...

We often use a technically incorrect term for bombs.

The ones that are dropped as part of a maneuver are often called bombs, like Seismic Charges or proton bombs.

But ones that are dropped as part of an action like prox mines or conner nets are often called mines.

Per the rules they're all bombs, but calling them mines is a bit easier than calling them "bombs dropped with an action".

I just go with action-bombs vs manoeuvre-bombs for that reason - mine isn't a defined term in the rules and indeed is only used by two of the three action-bombs.

Yes, you are correct and I do understand the difference - bad habit from "typical" board games - thanks.

I believe I understand now, thanks for the advice and info.

So where can I get the BIG reference card?

I like the BIG ref card - nicely done Parravon.

OK, I have a follow up to this.

Scenario: A ship drops a mine, such as a proximity mine, another ship runs into it so the mine detonate.

The ship that ran into the mine, do they get to roll defense dice?

Guess this would be for any mine or bomb - does the ship that gets hit get to roll defense dice?

My first thought is no, because it is not an attack, but not really sure that is correct.

Thank you.

No, you don't get to roll defense dice when you overlap or pass through a bomb template. You are correct in your assumption that it's because it isn't an attack. :)
